Classics and Me
Last Friday witnessed an extraordinary reading activity titled Classics and Me in our school hall, which
nearly drew the attention of all the Chinese classics lovers in our school.
Aimed at spreading traditional Chinese culture and fostering our reading habit, the activity was divided into
three parts. To begin with, a short film was shown, helping us know the stories behind the masterpieces created
by the great figures. After that, some student representatives delivered a speech to share their favourite classic
books, which struck a chord with the audience present. In the end, as well as taking a group photo, the
participants exchanged their books with each other.
By participating in the activity, not only did we get a profound insight into the traditional Chinese culture,
but also became more enthusiastic about Chinese classics.

Paragraph 1:
The young boy read the note and he became deathly silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My
father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss the game today?” The coach put his arm gently around the boy’s
shoulder and said, “Take the rest, kid.” He returned to the locker room, with tears blurring his vision. He didn’t
know how long he stayed in the room helplessly crying. At this moment, the whistle blowing for half time, he
saw all his teammates walking into the room in low spirits.
Paragraph 2:
Realizing the team was behind, he decided to put on his basketball suit. “Coach, please let me play,” said the
boy. To everyone’s surprise, this little unknown, who had never played before did everything right and eventually
made a three-pointer to win the game. Noticing him sitting quietly in the corner, the coach came to him and said,

“Fantastic! How did you do it?” He looked at the coach and forced a smile, “Today was the first time my father
could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could do it!” The boy knew that it was his father’s love and
support that brought him firmness and strength to keep going.

W: Bicycle exercise? Is that because you want to make your legs slim and beautiful in this way?
M: Actually, that’s not the main reason. They say riding a bike can build you up.

W: That doesn’t look right. Can you put the sofa next to that side table?
M: You mean we put the sofa across from the bookshelf?
W: Yes. Oh, and maybe we should just move the coffee table over here by these chairs.
M: Anything else?
W: Well, now the furniture looks good, but I think we should move those pictures.
M: I don’t know why you’re moving everything. It looked fine before.

M: I need to know if you are going to rent the apartment for the next whole year. You have to make a
decision next week.
W: Well, I’m still not sure. I tried to get a new job in town, and I don’t know if I’ll be hired yet. I should
know in a couple of months. Can I pay the rent monthly until I know if I get the job?
M: OK. But I need to know as soon as possible. I’ll need to look for a new person to stay in the house if you
leave.

W: Yes, you’re right. I am from South Africa. I am not at all used to this cold weather, but I am glad to say
that I have all the clothes for this freezing weather. Before I came to Finland to attend this meeting two weeks
ago, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern
Europe. She bought me some warm suits, dresses, and business type clothes, of course, of dark colours. She also
bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. She also
helped to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots. Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend!
