In war, young soldiers talk about things that give them hope-fast cars, hobbies,
friends and family. Peter Matthew Guenette was no different. He and his friends had
made plans to go to Hawaii together, but it wasn't meant to be. As a soldier, Peter had
a protective instinct(本能)that showed itself in all he did.
On May 18, 1968, instead of sunning themselves at the beautiful seaside, the
soldiers of Company D were surrounding an enemy base camp. Heavy fire from
enemy soldiers rained down on Peter's army.
Peter and three other soldiers took cover in a shell hole. Suddenly, an enemy
grenade ( 手 榴 弹 rolled into the hole between the soldiers. All at once, Peter
shouted a warning and covered the grenade with his body. He died immediately, but
his selfless action saved the lives of three men.
After death, Peter Matthew Guenette received the Medal of Honor, which was
presented to his wife, Susan, by President Richard Nixon in April 1970.
Peter served with my father in Vietnam. They were best friends. The story of his
death was often shared at family gatherings, and it's one that has impressed(使印象
深刻)our families. As we remember Peter's death, let us celebrate the lives of those
he saved. Let us honor all those who have fallen in service to the country, not by
words, but by making a personal commitmentto those closest to us that we
may give up ourselves so that others may live, and live happily.
