Cheap Travel
You can pay a fortune to travel around the world. Or you can pay nothing at all. Here are some places
you'll never regret visiting. They won't cost you a dime.
The British Museum, London U.K.
You need to go here to see the Egyptian mummies, the ancient Greek marbles and so many other
treasures. It's open every day, and unlike most other attractions in England that cost an arm and a leg, it's

National Mall, Washington D. C. U. S, A.
You can walk a pathway from the Lincoln Memorial to the severe Vietnam Veterans Memorial and to
the Washington Monument with other sights in between. Do you know you can go up in the elevator to the
top of the Washington Monument? Tickets are free, but pay a small fee to reserve them in advance to avoid
being disappointed.
Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris France
This great treasure of the world simply can’t be missed. The great stained-glass rose window alone is
worth the visit. The Sunday Mass with the Gregorian chant was like stepping back in time. Admission is
free every day, but you are welcome to leave a donation. There are also free tours a few times each week.
You 'll be additionally charged for tours of the bell tower or the crypt.
TipsThe Notre-Dame Cathedral was greatly damaged by a massive fire in April 2019. Please visit
notredamedepairs. fr/en/ for more information regarding future visits to the cathedral.

I was determined to learn swimming at the age of ten. At the K. P. L. B. was a pool offering the
opportunity. My mother constantly warned against it, and bore fresh in my mind the details of each
drowning in the river. But the K. P. L. B. pool was safe.
My fear of water started from childhood. It began when I was four years old and father took me to the
beach. There the huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The K. P. L B. pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait
for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, Skinny! How'd you like to be ducked?” With that he
picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was
not frightened out of my wits-when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, come out of the
surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought
was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound
came out. I went down, down, endlessly.
When I came to consciousness, I found myself on the bed in the hospital.
I never went back to the pool I avoided water whenever I could . This misadventure stayed with me as
the years rolled by. It deprived me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an
instructor. Piece by piece, I practised hard and finally he built a swimmer. Several months later. the
instructor was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return.
This went on till July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was
in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water.
I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?”
I had conquered my fear of water.

EVEN the best of communicators can sometimes hit a wrong note, whether with a joke, turn of phrase,
or even an ill-timed chuckle (轻笑).
For instance, a former finance minister Ken Gabriel usually tries to keep things casual when
answering reporters' questions. But in a television interview on the news program 60 Minutes, some people
felt his register was a little too casual-even careless.
At one point, Gabriel spoke about the bankers who have been widely blamed for causing the collapse
of the financial sector: ”I mean there were a whole bunch of folks who, on paper, if you looked at
quarterly reports, were wildly successful, selling derivatives that turned out to be ••• completely worthless
Gabriel said, with a chuckle.
Shocked by Gabriel's laughter during the interview, journalist David finally asked"You're sitting
here. And you' re-you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems- n
Gabriel quickly explained himself by replying, No, no. There' s gotta be a little humor to get you
through the day. " But that exchange ended up making news, as TV pundits, journalists and public
relations experts debated Gabriel' s tone-
One unnamed strategist for Gabriel, s party said that the finance minister' s attempts at humor were
distracting " Gabriel is gifted in so many ways, but humor is not something that he seems to be
comfortable with. He does not come across as a funny guy.”
The TV critic Daniel g meanwhile, came to Gabriel s defense.
“Gabriel isn't a rookie • •• All this laughter seems clearly to be calculated rather than accidental. His
laughs last night were designed as laughs of reassurance. They were designed to tell the TV audience he
understands the severity of the situation."
There would have been little debate if Gabriel had not laughed during a speech. Answering questions
in a public setting, however, should allow for a more conversational register. But as Gabriel discovered, not
