When Bella Lin was 12 years old, she noticed that her guinea pigs seemed unhappy in their small
cage with “prison-like bars”, Lin told the CNBC Make It website. Focusing on finding an alternative to traditional
cages for her pets, the now 17-year-old from Mountain View, US, began her designs.
Lin experimented with multiple designs and used around $2,000 from her savings to start her side business,
Guinea Loft, on Amazon in November 2022. It made a big difference and sold nearly 11,000 cages and brought in
more than $410,000 in 2023, according to CNBC Make It.
Initially, Lin informed her father of her desire to develop an improved cage. Her father had relations with a
family-owned factory in China through a previous client, and he reached out to them.
Traditional guinea pig cages typically consist of bars, roofs, and either tarp or plastic bottoms,
making them hard to clean and often smell bad. Lin’s initial glass, open-floor cages offered more visibility and
mobility, with a two-layered bottom. This design allows for the easy removal of soiled bedding by pushing it into a
removable plastic tray . However, due to high shipping costs, the glass material was impractical, and the
open floor caused problems for her smaller guinea pigs, as their feet would get stuck.
Lin and her six-person team in China devoted late nights to researching and testing products. Her team
handled the sourcing, manufacturing, packaging and photography of the products. In the end, they chose acrylic,
instead of glass, and crafted replaceable bottoms, as Lin described it. The bottoms are easy to throw out, which is
good for business: Once customers run out of the bottoms, they have to visit Lin’s Amazon store again to restock.
“Witnessing the practical effects of Guinea Loft cages through customer reviews and emails is empowering,”
Lin said. “As someone who once placed great emphasis on academic recognition, the success of my side business
has boosted my confidence in exploring life beyond high school.”
( )4What inspired Lin to design a new cage for guinea pigs?
AThe huge profits in her business. BTheir bad living conditions.
CHer unpleasant experience at school. DHer desire to replace old cages.
( )5What is a major advantage of Lin’s new cage?
AIt is waterproof. BIt lasts long. CIt is easy to clean. DIt smells nice.
( )6How does Lin sound in the last paragraph?
AHumorous. BConcerned. CEncouraged. DCurious.
( )7What may be a suitable title for the text?
AInventing for Our Pets BRunning a Side Business
CBella Lin’s Academic Achievements DThe Application of Guinea Pig Cages

Disabled astronauts-in-training have completed a zero-gravity flight 25,000ft above Earth to help understand
how spacesuits and spaceships can be made more accessible.
The group of 14, who were from five different countries, including Australia, Brazil, Germany, Spain and the
US, was made up of scientists, engineers and doctors. They have mobility, vision and hearing difficulties.
The groundbreaking trip, organized by AstroAccess, happened on a Zero-G aircraft in Houston, Texas. It came
just weeks after the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that former Paralympian runner, John McFall,
would be part of the 2022 ESA Astronaut Class. The mission took off and landed at Ellington Airport, next to the
Houston Spaceport and the NASA Johnson Space center —home to the US human spaceflight training.
On climbing to a height of 25,000ft, the vehicle began 18 parabolic manoeuvres 线, allowing
the crews to test out what was needed to make trips to space more accessible for those with disabilities.
One group tested a set of tactile graphics to be added to cabin walls that would allow both
blind crew members and short-sighted crew members to maintain a sense of direction during emergencies and help
them find emergency device in zero gravity if the lights went off. Those working with the Blind and Mobility Crew
were able to demonstrate that a disabled person can independently get into a launch seat and safely fasten the five-
point seat belt, proving that disabled people can safely join space missions. The hard-of-hearing and blind crews
worked with Sony and Sonic Cloud to help improve speech understanding systems onboard, using Sonic Cloud’s
innovative sound personalization software.
Matt Gohd, CEO of Zero-G Corporation said: “From our time with Steven Hawking to our relationship with
AstroAccess, Zero-G believes that the only limits you have are the ones you place on yourself. We are honored to
share this amazing experience and the first steps to space with this extraordinary group of individuals. Space should
be open to everyone.”
( )8What is the idea behind the flight?
ASpace travel can be accessible to everyone.
BSpace travel will become a popular industry.
CSpace travel can develop a spirit of adventure.
DSpace travel will be good for universe exploration.
( )9What was special about the flight?
AIt had a former athlete on board. BIt was designed for disabled people.
CIt was the first zero-gravity flight ever. DIt got financial aid from different countries.
( )10Why were the tests conducted?
ATo make preparations for the flight.
BTo enhance speech understanding systems.
CTo better the skills of the disabled in using launch seats.
DTo evaluate the possibility of space travel for the disabled.
( )11What message is conveyed in Matt Gohd’s words?
AGreat minds think alike. BUnity is strength.
CActions speak louder than words. DAnything is possible.
