Growing up in Conway, South Carolina, I was always athletic and competitive. One
afternoon, my brother grabbed me in the yard, and I felt some kind of pop. About an
hour later, I couldn't get up from a chair. Over the weekend, my joints(关节) swelled up.
My mother took me to the hospital. It took nearly six months to check what was wrong
with me. Then I was put on treatment. But I had so much joint damage that I couldn't
run like I used to.
My dad was a serious golfer. One day he said, “Let's try golf.” He carried me onto
the course. Seeing him hit those good shots made me want to do it too.
It wasn't easy at first, because I had a lot of pain in my hands. I'd played golf, but it
had never really caught my interest—it was too quiet for me. But I was happy to be
outside, to have a chance of competing again, and I fell in love with it.
Later I made the high school team, but I got frustrated when I didn't win, so I
worked harder. Golf was the most challenging game I'd ever played.
I got a golf scholarship to the University of South Carolina and turned professional
after I graduated. I still take medication, and I'm stiff and in pain sometimes. But I've
got used to that.
I probably wouldn't be a professional athlete if I hadn't got sick. The experience
taught me patience, and I learned to take nothing for granted. I know how happy I am to
do what I do.

at first.

professional.
DThe author thought he should cherish everything he had, even his disease.
27What would be the best title for the passage?
APlaying through pain BThe burden lifted

China's hot word, tuhao, may be in Oxford English Dictionary.
In Chinese, tu means rude and hao means rich. In recent years, people use this term

You wake up in the mornings. The day is beautiful and the plans for the day
are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings,
you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing tone in
his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to
look forward to. Are you still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!
Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not
change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel
depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life
