Over the last century, engineers all over the world have made efforts to achieve great success in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The164.8-kilometre-long bridge
built in 2011 in China operates as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxi
ng that previously took 4. 5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America
connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as
a “box-girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles ( 车
辆) per day, making it better known in the world.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world’s longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-long bridge was opened in
1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was at first built without a
roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness
Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was
settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay
Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”.

I travel a lot in my work, and what I dislike about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see
others laughing and talking. So, room service for several nights was a better choice for me.
After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room.
Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The waiter at the front desk made a comment(评论) about
my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely
table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.
I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights,
weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some
customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the
kitchen for a moment.
Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some
other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!
When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big
group to my table, and presented me with a red rose. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a
beautiful experience.

A. knew how to attract more customers to his restaurant
B. found it hard to balance his work and his family
C. was getting tired of his present job
D. had never had such a chance to talk about his worries
7. The author wants to tell us that ______.
A. people are actually all lonely in their own way
B. restaurants should put the need of customers first
C. the kindness of strangers can make you less lonely
D. restaurants are full of surprises for lonely people

My two daughters and I got into the car to spend our weekend in Florida. Autumn, the elder one, offered to
drive. I sat next to her, and Amber sat in back. After setting out, the three of us sang to the radio at the top of our
voice.
It was a great trip until the rain poured and the rain was too heavy. “I have to pull over.” Autumn said. She
tried to enter the far right lane (车道) to find a place to stop, but trucks ran fast, making water onto our car. The car
was out of control, then worse — it started to move left and right. Autumn fought to control it but it was too late.
We ran into a truck. The girls jumped out of the car. My chest felt much pain.
“Get out, Mom. Come on!” Amber cried. “I can’t.” I said. Autumn took out her cellphone. “There’s been an
accident. Send an ambulance (救护车)!” Amber and Autumn pulled me out of the car and helped me lie on my
back in the grassy area by the roadside. I had to calm myself and looked up. A man held a large umbrella over me
and other kind faces appeared above me. A woman helped to treat a cut over Amber’s eye. Another woman came
close to me and said, “No one in the truck was injured. Help was on the way.” The woman mentioned she was a
nurse; the other woman who took care of Amber’s cut was an eye specialist. We couldn’t have asked for better care.
In the hospital the pain in my chest began to disappear. Later, the tests at the hospital made sure we had no
serious injuries. We’d left all our troubles behind thanks to these kind people, who seemed to be angels (天使) in
my eyes.
8. How did the author and her two daughters feel after setting out?
A. They were worried about the weather. B. They enjoyed themselves greatly.
C. They thought it was a long journey. D. They felt lucky to take the journey.
9. What’s Autumn going to do when the rain poured?
A. To stop by the roadside. B. To follow the truck closely,
C. To get into the fast traffic lane. D. To move the car left and right.
10. Which is TRUE according to the accident?
A. The author herself drove the car. B. It was raining heavily.
C
.
A nurse held a large umbrella to help. D. The truck driver was badly injured.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A
.
Unexpected heavy rain B. Leave our troubles behind
