Long Beach, a 28-mile area of beach, lies in southwestern Washington, and is generally
called Long Beach Peninsula. Communities there take you back to old days of a simple life.
Here, visitors can relax and enjoy the good of a total rest.
Bird watching
There are different kinds of birds on Long Beach. It’s best if you watch them from a
distance and don’t try to frighten them. The Southwest Loop Route Map can be got through
the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Office by calling l-800-451-2542.
Horses
A popular activity on Long Beach is horseback riding. Two businesses in the city of
Long Beach offer guided horseback tours along the beach: Black Country Wilderness
Outfitters and Skippers Equestrian Center. You may also bring your own horse. Among the
adventures offered with horses is a wagon ride along the beach, a carriage ride through Sea
view or Long Beach, a back country pack trip, or a sunset ride by horseback on the beach.
Camping
RV and tent camping aren’t allowed on the beach. Camp fires are allowed within 100
feet off the beach, but must be away from the dry grass.
Swimming and other activities
Swimming is allowed, but you must be careful. The waters are very cold and
dangerous. Surfing is advised only for experienced surfers. Beach driving is allowed at
certain areas on the beach. The speed limit is 25 mph. Building sand castles, digging sand to

As you are growing and changing, you have more responsibilities and also more
freedom to spend time with other people. While you may feel ready to make your own
decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find
you are arguing with your parents more than you used to. The reason why your parents do
this is that they care about you and want to protect you from danger.
Here are some tips for how to avoid and handle arguments with your parents:
(1)Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able
to learn their opinions before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why
each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you
feel and suggest what you think are right rules. Your parents may be willing to listen to your
ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.
(2)Try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your
parents that you are responsible and mature(成熟的) by talking instead of shouting.
(3)Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount
of time they spend with their friends. Communicate with each other and make some special
family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend at home. Suggest activities that
your whole family will enjoy together such as going on a hike, taking a bike ride, or going to
the beach.
19Your parents limit your activity mainly because they .
Aare worried about your safety
Bare afraid it will affect your study
Cthink the thing you’ll do is bad
Dwant you to be with them at home
20We can learn from the passage that the right rules are those .
Ayou have to obey
Byou and your parents have discussed
Cyour parents make
Dyou and your parents can both accept
21When your parents prevent you from doing something, you should .
Aargue with them
Bcontrol yourself
Cfight for your freedom
Dnot listen to them
22What’s the purpose of the family activities in the last paragraph?
ATo build up their bodies.
BTo visit more places of interest.
CTo make parents happy.
DTo make children and their parents get along better.

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became
harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teachers dream student. So at the
start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well,
but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all
things related (有关的) to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. As class.
Mr. A always greeted ( ) us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a
great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but
for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us
with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I
can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself.
Being in Mr. As presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year
progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly.
My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr.
AWe didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).
Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math
student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There
were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me
down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!”
23What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
AInterest. BResponsibility. CDislike. DMisunderstanding.
24What first made the author look forward to math class?
AMr. As attitude.
BHer interest in math.
CHer friends’ encouragement.
DThe top achievers in her class.
25How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A?
AIt was straight.
BIt was awkward.
CIt was challenging.
DIt was impressive.
26How did the author change in math?
AShe made slow progress.
BShe fell in love with math.
CShe became a straight-A math student.
DShe became comfortable with difficult math questions.
D
People from East Asia tend to have more difficulties than those from Europe in
distinguishing facial expressions and a new report published online in Current Biology
explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly
(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial
expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure,
whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
