Last week witnessed a grand speech competition themed “The Person I Admire Most” taking
place in our school, which was well received by all the students and teachers.
Having made full preparations, all the participants strived to win the first prize, stirring up a
lively atmosphere on the scene. The topics varied from person to person, ranging from celebrities in
movies or music, ordinary people in the daily life to people of great achievements in various fields.
As far as I am concerned, the person I admire most is my father, who spares no effort to support my
family as well as pursue his career. It is his devotion to our family and his passion for work that leave
a deep impression on me, encouraging me to follow his example.
A life without a role model is like a sailing without a compass. Let’s follow the footsteps of the
person we admire most to fulfill our dreams.

The curtain was rising, and I needed to concentrate. So confident did I feel that I walked
towards the stage as if I had been the princess for a long time. I was sure I could deeply impress the
audience as well as Mr. Ellison with my excellent acting skills. Everything was perfect at the
beginning. However, since I had only watched the rehearsal but hadn’t practiced, I said other actors
lines twice and forgot several of my own with the show progressing. What was even worse, my
awkward movements and intentional acting ended with more laughter from the audience. Their
laughter, in turn, triggered my attempt to try harder, which, however, made me the laughingstock of
the whole performance.
The terrible performance finally over, I sighed with a relief, hoping no one noticed my mistakes.
No sooner had I gone down the stage than I found my families waiting there. Feeling even more
embarrassed, I told them that I had lied to them and that I had never been a part of the show until the
last minute. I thought my sisters and brothers would laugh at me. However, to my surprise, they all
came over and hugged me tightly, comforting me gently and congratulating me on my first formal
performance in public. “We are here to support you since you are our family whether you are
performing on the stage or working behind the curtains,” my mother said, scratching my head. It was
not until then that I realized the true meaning of familywe are supporting each other not because of
our excellence but due to our connection.

M: Excuse me, where can I get some noodles and dumplings?
W: They are in the food area. Please follow me, sir.
2
M: Are you going to the concert tonight at 8:15 pm? I bought the tickets.
W: Great! Let’s meet at 6:30 pm to grab dinner.
M: Ok, I will pick you up twenty minutes earlier. See you then!
3
W: I didn’t see you at Jane’s birthday party last night.
M: It’s a pity. But I had to see my roommate off at the airport. He will study at an American
university.
4
W: What are you up to?
M: I’m reading a new novel. It’s quite a page-turner!
W: After a while, could you water the plants? I am busy writing the report.
M: No problem.
5
M: Ellen, have you got a meeting at Edinburgh?
W: Yes, I’m going to see some important people. Why do you ask?
M: I’m going there on Wednesday.
W: Oh, I’m driving there tomorrow. Why not go with me?
6
M: Look at this advert for outdoor activities at the weekend. The climbing looks very interesting.
W: Dad, I don’t think anyone in this family is in shape for such an activity. Why don’t we go sailing
along the coast instead? It will be warmer there.
M: But we did that last year. I would like us to try something else.
W: So what else do you suggest?
M: Oh, I know. There’s a beginners’ course every Saturday at the mountain ski school! I will give
them a call to book three places for us on the course.
7
W: Hi, Michelle. I haven’t seen your dad for a long time. How is he? Is he still driving a taxi for
people going to the airport?
M: Actually, he is taking a break from it at the moment and is doing some hours at the local
garage.
W: That’s what my dad used to do when he was younger.
M: Didn’t he become the manager of a shop in the city centre?
W: That’s right. He is the sales manager at the department store next to the bank.
M: Oh, be quiet. Our professor is coming now. The class begins.
8
W: Have your friends got plans for the weekend?
M: Yeah, I know Andrew’s going to the gym.
W: Right. Is Wendy going too?
M: No, she’s not going out at all. Her grandpa is coming to stay, so she needs to help her parents
tidy up their apartment. It’s still untidy after her party last weekend.
W: Oh dear! What about Victor?
M: He’s going to see a football match in the stadium with one of his cousins. Some of the guys from
his basketball club have extra tickets.

W: Is Delbert going?
M: Actually, he still needs to finish his geography project, so he’s going to the city library. His
sister will go with him to read some storybooks.
9
W: Oh, Mike! I didn’t know you had any interest in painting.
M: I don’t know much about it at all, so I thought it would be a good idea to take this course.
W: Did you go to the art show last night?
M: No, there was lots of work in the lab. The show is open for one more day, so I’m going to see it
tonight with my sister. What do you think of it?
W: I love it. Desirees paintings will catch your eyes as soon as you see them and then your eyes
lock on them.
M: I can’t wait to see them myself. And did you say the painters name was Desiree?
W: Yes, but she only uses that name when she paints. Her real name is Lucy Green. But don’t you
think Desiree really sounds more exciting?
M: It sure does. Oh, it looks like Mr. Brown is here. I will talk to you after class.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I’m pleased to meet all of you here because you are my
special guests. Welcome to the museum of our company. My name is Brown. I am the general
manager of the company. As you all know, we mainly make computers in our company. We also
make some other products. But we are quite interested in education. Thats why we have
founded this museum. We hope children can learn how computers have been developed, how
they are made and how they are used in industry, agriculture, scientific research, and many
other areas. Children can try the computers. They can push buttons and listen to stories about
computers, and they can enjoy video shows. I know you are all teachers, and you know what
school children really need. So I hope you can give me some advice after you have looked
around. I want my museum to be the best when it opens to all school children. This is Mr Tom
Silver, my assistant. He will tell you more about our museum. I’ll be with you again in one hour
and a half. Enjoy yourselves. See you later!
