Every four years, more than ten thousand athletes from all over the world compete in the Summer Olympics.
The two-week Summer Olympics is the biggest sporting event in the world, beating out even soccers World Cup.
The early Olympic Games, however, were not the worldwide sports that the Summer Olympics are today. The
modern Olympics were started in 1896 by Baron Pierre de Coubertain, a French educator. The first Games, in
Athens, saw just 300 male athletes from 14 countries. Women’s participation () was non-existent then, but the
2012 Games made history with female competitors from every nation.
International participation was also limited by transportation in the early Games. The first Olympics held in
the United States were in St. Louis in 1904. Getting to St. Louis from Europe in 1904 required a trans-Atlantic boat
trip and a 1000-mile train ride as there were no airlines back then.
Furthermore, some of the early competitors were not the highly-trained professional athletes. For example,
Betty Robinson, a sixteen-year-old high school student from Illinois, won the gold medal in the 100-meter dash in
1924. The Olympics in Amsterdam were only Robinson’s fourth track meet after her sprinting ( ) ability had
