The sunmao () method of joinery was commonly used in ancient Chinese architecture
and furniture. But when modern technology discourages many in mastering this ancient skill, Jia
Jing, a junior student at Hubei Ecology Polytechnic College, offers his answer.
“It is essential to train young people in this craft,” said the 20-year-old. “Not only does it
ensure the preservation of carpentry ( ) skills, but there exist delicate wooden artifacts from
ancient times that machines still cannot repeat.”
Growing up in a family with a carpenter father, Jia would constantly observe his father
doing woodwork and sometimes assist him. This early exposure ignited ( ) his passion and
talent for carpentry. But as a child, he couldn’t build furniture on his own. So, he conveyed this
passion into building with Lego bricks at the age of 8.
“At that time, I would think before going to bed about what I would build tomorrow,” Jia
recalled. “I brainstormed a framework in my mind, and the next day I would start building it.”
This hobby significantly benefited Jia’s future furniture-making skills. Before making any
piece, Jia can quickly sketch a draft in his mind, which proves useful during the carving process.
When the moment arrived for Jia to head to college, he chose interior design at the
suggestion of his father. Beyond his theoretical studies, Jia also signed up for school furniture-
making training center. Sawing, planning, and carving wood repeatedly every day can be an
extremely dull job for most young people. While other students were enjoying their college life,
Jia had already learned to bear loneliness and focus on achieving excellence. “This experience not
only improved my skills but also tested my character,” Jia said.
Recently, Jias commitment to this craft achieved a significant milestone. He was chosen as
one of the candidates to compete on behalf of China at the 47th World Skills Competition in Lyon,
France next year.
“If I can represent China on the global stage, I will exert all my efforts to become the
winner,” Jia said.
24Why should young people learn the sunmao method according to Jia Jing?
AIt is key to making Chinese furniture. BIt is better than modern technology.
CIt exhibits traditional Chinese culture. DIt exhibits ancient carpentry wisdom.
25How did Lego benefit Jia Jing?
AArousing his interest in carpentry. BAssisting his father in furniture making.
CImproving his carpentry skills. DPreparing him for his ideal university.
26What did Jia sacrifice during his college time?
AHis leisure time. BHis practical skills.
CHis theoretical studies. DHis original character.
27What can be the best title of this text?
AMaking furniture against technology. BPreserving carpentry inside Lego.
CCarving dreams in wood. DContinuing passion on global stage.

Scanning an item at checkout is something we take for granted in this age of convenience.
We can thank barcodes for that. It’s been 50 years since the beginning of this game-changing
technology.
On March 31, 1971, a historic meeting took place in New York City and included
executives from some of the top US companies at that time. The meeting agreed to create a system
to uniquely identify every single product, calling it the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), the
core of barcodes, according to El Mundo, a Spanish newspaper.
What information does a barcode contain? Where the product comes from, where it has
been, its price, expiration ()... you name it. The first two numbers indicate where that
product has been identified (the place), then there is the number that corresponds to the
manufacturing company and the rest of the numbers uniquely identify each unit that the
manufacturer makes.
Barcodes don’t only identify the category of goods but also manage the number of goods.
For example, if there are 10 cartons of milk and a customer takes one, it will be registered when it
is scanned at the cash counter, so the store owner knows there are nine cartons left and manages
stock accurately.
“Its creation allowed the first digitization in the control of the stock,” José María Bonmatí,
general director of AECOC, a Spanish commercial association, told El Mundo. “The unique
identification of products at a global level was the key that opened the door to retail as we know it
today.”
In the past five decades, barcodes have provided many conveniences for commerce. The
next generation of barcodes, such as QR codes, can hold vastly more information. Their use, for
example, can tell consumers if a product contains allergens ( 过 敏 原 ), if it is organic and
information on its carbon footprint. Ultimately, this provides consumers with a greater level of
trust and loyalty relating to the products they buy,” according to GS 1, the organization that
develops and maintains the global barcodes standard.
28What does the article tell us about barcodes?
AThey were first introduced five decades ago.
BThey were developed by a Spanish executive.
CThe GTIN was the first version of a barcode.
DThey are used by some of the top companies worldwide.
29What information can people get by scanning barcodes?
AA product’s carbon footprint.
BA product’s marketing company.
CThe allergens contained in a product.
DThe remaining amount of a certain product in stock.
30What is the benefit of barcodes according to José María Bonmatí?
AThey help improve the quality of goods.
BThey furthered the development of retail.
CThey offer consumers a wider choice of products.
DThey save companies from having to stock products.
31What is the attitude of GS 1?
AConcerned BDoubt CCritical DPositive

Search “toxic parents”, and you’ll find more than 38, 000 posts, largely urging young adults
to cut ties with their families. The idea is to safeguard one’s mental health from abusive parents.
However, as a psychoanalyst (精神分析学家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years become a way
to manage conflicts in the family, and I have seen the severe impacts estrangement ( ) has on
both sides of the divide. This is a self-help trend that creates much harm.
“Canceling” your parent can be seen as an extension of a cultural trend aimed at correcting
imbalances in power and systemic inequality. Today’s social justice values respond to this reality,
calling on us to criticize oppressive and harmful figures and to gain power for those who have
been powerless. But when adult children use the most effective tool they have themselves to
gain a sense of security and ban their parents from their lives, the roles are simply switched, and
the pain only deepens.
Often, what I see in my practice are cases of family conflict mismanaged, power dynamics
turned upside down rather than negotiated. I see the terrible effect of that trend: situations with no
winners, only isolated humans who long to be known and feel safe in the presence of the other.
The catch is that after estrangement, adult children are not suddenly less dependent. In fact,
they feel abandoned and betrayed, because in the unconscious, it doesn’t matter who is doing the
leaving; the feeling that remains is “being left”. They carry the ghosts of their childhood, tackling
the emotional reality that those who raised us can never truly be left behind, no matter how hard
we try.
What I have found is that most of these families need repair, not permanent break-up. How
can one learn how to negotiate needs, to create boundaries and to trust? How can we love others,
and ourselves, if not through accepting the limitations that come with being human? Good
relationships are the result not of a perfect level of harmony but rather of successful adjustments.
To pursue dialogue instead of estrangement will be hard and painful work. It can’t be a
single project of “self-help”, because at the end of the day, real intimacy () is achieved
by working through the injuries of the past together. In most cases of family conflict, repair is
possible and preferable to estrangement – and it’s worth the work.
32Why do young people cut ties with the family?
ATo gain an independent life. BTo restore harmony in the family.
CTo protect their psychological well-being.DTo follow a tendency towards social justice.
33What does the underlined word “catch” in Paragraph 4 mean?
AResponse. BProblem. COperation. DEmphasis.
34To manage family conflict, the author agrees that young adults should________.
Abreak down boundaries Bgain power within the family
Clive up to their parents’ expectations Daccept imperfection of family members
35What’s the authors purpose of writing the passage?
ATo advocate a self-help trend. BTo justify a common social value.
