When I was a boy, we had several gardens around our old house. The largest one of all was used just for
growing potatoes.
I can still remember those potato-planting days. The whole family helped. After my father had tilled(犁地) the
soil, my mother, brothers and I went to work. It was my job to drop the little seed potatoes in the rows while my
mother dropped handfuls of fertilizer(肥料) beside them. My brothers then covered them with the freshly turned
earth.
For months afterward I would glance over the garden while I played outside and wonder what was going on
underneath the ground. When the harvest time came, my father pulled them out of the soil. I was amazed at the
huge size of the potatoes. Those little seeds had grown into huge delicious potatoes.
They would be turned into all kinds of delicious food: baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes. And
my personal favorite: potatoes slow cooked in spaghetti sauce(意大利酱). They would keep the entire family well
fed throughout the whole year. It truly was a miracle(奇迹).
Thinking back on those special times makes me wonder how many other seeds I have planted in the hearts and
minds of others. Every single day, we plant seeds that can grow into something wonderful. I hope that you plant
only goodness, peace and happiness in the lives of everyone you meet. I hope that every day you help miracles to
grow.

Having an older brother comes with plenty of benefits. Big brothers tend to look after their younger brothers
and sisters, and despite the occasional unpleasant moments here and there, many siblings( 兄弟姐 妹) enjoy life-
long close relationships. However, a new study finds an interesting disadvantage. Children with older brothers take
longer when it comes to developing language skills.
Researchers studied more than 1,000 children from birth to the age of five-and-a half years old. Each child’s
language skills were tested at ages 2, 3, and 5.5, using tests specially designed to measure lots of aspects of
language development such as vocabulary, syntax(句法), and verbal(文字的) reasoning. What the research team
discovered was significant. Children with an older brother had, on average, a two-month delay in their language
development compared to studied children with an older sister.
As far as explaining this phenomenon( 现 象 ), researchers have proposed two assumptions. The first is that
older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers, which would compensate( 补偿) for parents potentially
being less present than they were for their first child. The second assumption is that older sisters usually compete
with their siblings less than older brothers for their parents’ attention. The study’s authors say they can’t say for
certain why children with older brothers have a harder time developing language skills. In the future they would
like to study if culture or location impacts the prevalence(盛行) of these results.
The study is published in Psychological Science.
28. What did the new study find?
A. Big brothers tend to look after their siblings.
B. Siblings tend to fight each other.
C. Many siblings enjoy life-long relationships.
D. Children with older brothers are slower in learning language.
29. What is the purpose of the second paragraph?
A. To explain the approach of the research. B. To show some problems of the findings.
C. To offer some evidence given by experts. D. To convince readers to get involved in.
30. Which of the following belongs to the possible reasons?
A. Older brothers fight for patents’ attention. B. Older brothers are stronger than older sisters.
C. Parents prefer older brothers to older sisters. D. Older sisters can’t control their siblings.
31. What is the researchers’ attitude towards their study?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Satisfied. D. Excited.
D
The International Space Station (ISS) is a science laboratory in space. It is made of many different pieces that
have been added on slowly since 1998. The group of astronauts working there changes often, but people have been
living in the ISS for almost 18 years.
On Wednesday, NASA discovered that there was a leak in the ISS. The station is full of air that the astronauts
can breathe. But outside the ISS, in space, there is no air. That means the pressure inside the station is much higher.
So, the ISS was like a bike tire with a tiny hole in it.
On Thursday, the astronauts went to work and soon found the leak. It was less than 2 millimeters wide. That’s
about as wide as the lead(笔芯) on a pencil that hasn’t been sharpened. The hole is in a Russian part of the station,
called the Soyuz. The Soyuz is the spacecraft that brought three of the astronauts to the ISS. Luckily, the Soyuz can
still be used to return to Earth. When the astronauts first found the leak, German astronaut Alexander Gerst did
something that seemed very natural — he covered the hole with his thumb. Because the hole was so tiny, the
astronauts were never in any danger. But it was still important to stop the leak. While they waited for more advice
from Earth, the astronauts covered the hole with special tape. After many people discussed the problem on the
ground, the astronauts were told how to fix the hole. Sergey Prokopyev of Russia did the job, filling the hole with
cloth soaked in special glue.
The repair seems to have worked. The astronauts were able to get the air pressure back to normal. On Friday,
the astronauts returned to their regular work.
NASA says that the hole was probably made by a tiny bit of a meteorite(陨石) — a rock flying through space.
Some people believe the hole could be from a screw(螺丝) that came loose. It is also possible that the station was
hit by a small piece of “space debris( 残 骸 )” — tiny pieces of trash from other spacecraft. As more and more
rockets and satellites are sent into space, space debris is a more common problem.
32. What was the problem with the ISS?
A. The air started to go out from the ISS.
B. The ISS was hit by a piece of space debris.
C. The pressure outside the ISS was higher than that inside.
D. The astronauts inside the ISS had difficulty in breathing.
33. What do we know about the hole?
A. It was as sharp as a pencil lead.
