After defeating her
opponent Feng Xiaocan
in a UFC tournament in Macao in November,
China's mixed
martial arts
(MMA) fighter
Shi Ming solidified her
reputation
- not just
through her
athletic performance, but also for her identity as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner.
Shi's journey into
the world of
martial arts
began at college when she
joined her university's
martial
arts
team.
With
natural
talent
and an unwavering
(坚定的)
work ethic, she quickly
excelled
in local competitions. Under the guidance of US catch wrestling coach
Bagher Amanolahi, Shi
immersed herself in mastering MMA's
multifaceted
techniques.
Her
dedication soon paid off as she
transitioned from
local competitions
to the global stage. Since
2020, she
has fought 12
MMA
matches,
including three UFC fights
in 2024.
While her rise in MMA
has been
impressive, what sets Shi
apart
is
her
ability to balance
two demanding careers. Her days often start with early-morning hospital shifts, followed by intense
evening training sessions. Despite the challenges,
Shi believes her dual roles complement each other.
“Medicine and martial arts
both
require discipline, empathy, and a commitment to continuous
learning,” she said. Her medical expertise
in
TCM has
also
proven
invaluable
in
her
athletic
career
as
it could
aid recovery for herself and her teammates.
Balancing her medical career with her UFC dreams is not without challenges. As she faces
increasingly strong international competitors, Shi acknowledges that a decision may eventually be
needed. “There may come a time when I need to focus more on the fighting,” she said. “If that
happens, I'll gradually shift my focus more toward the sport.”
As she envisions her future, Shi has an unconventional aspiration ( 渴 望 ). “If I ever get the
chance, I
would love to wear a qipao, or Chinese traditional dress,
to the
UFC cage to
show
the
strength of Chinese women in sports and represent my culture,” she said.
24. What made Shi Ming stand out among other MMA fighters?
A. Her victory in the UFC tournament in Macao.
B. Her experience as a TCM practitioner.

A. They compete for her time and attention. B. They are interdependent.
C. They enhance each other. D. They are completely separate.
26. Which of the following qualities best describes
Shi Ming based on the article?

C. Caring and open-minded D. Committed and independent
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

B. Shi has an interest in combining fashion with martial arts.
C. Shi has a great ambition of becoming a UFC champion.
D. Shi has a strong sense of cultural identity and pride.

It's not unusual for the words of influencers to gain popularity. But the influential
philosopher Henry
David Thoreau was born
more
than 200
years ago
--
and now
a term he's
credited with
introducing, “brain rot” , is the Oxford University
Press's word or phrase of
2024.
Thoreau
used the term in
his 1854
book Walden, as he
criticized oversimplification.
He
asked, “Why level downward to our
dullest perception always, and
praise
that
as common
sense?”
Today, brain
rot reflects
a
worry
that consuming the
internet's
endless waves of memes
and video clips, especially
on
social media, might numb
one's head.
“For Thoreau, ‘brain-rot ’ describes what happens to our minds and spirits when
we suppress
our inner
instincts
for curiosity and wonder, ” Ellis, an authority on Thoreau,
says, “and
instead resign ourselves to the unreflective habits we
observe
all
around us. ”
In today ’s usage, brain rot
is
seen as a cautionary
term for what
might
happen to us if
we get too distracted.
“It's not just TikTok crazes but virtually our
entire 24/7 media
culture
that Thoreau would accuse of belittling our minds, ” she adds.
Casper Grathwohl,
president
of
Oxford Languages,
said
that
he finds it
fascinating
that
“brain
rot”
is
being embraced by younger
people.
“It feels like a rightful next chapter
in the
cultural
conversation about humanity and technology,” he
said.
When
asked about
how Thoreau might
have
seen
our culture, “I think he
might
actually
see us
as in a more or
less
similar situation
as
the society he lived
in, ” Ellis says.
“His
point
is that whether
or not things
are worse
now
than they were,
our task at
all times is the
same:
to try our
hardest
to commit
ourselves
to the things that
matter
most in
our brief and
miraculous lives, ” Ellis says.
28. What does “brain rot” reflect in today’s
society?
A. People's love for social media.
B. The popularity of memes and video clips.
C. Concerns about overconsuming internet content.
D. The increasing number of influencers.
29. The underlined word “suppress” in Paragraph 4 probably means .
A. hold back B. wake up C.depend on D. open up
30. What is Casper Grathwohl's attitude to the younger generation embracing “brain rot”?
A. Negative B. Positive C. Neutral D.
Uncertain
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Rise of “Brain Rot” B. Thoreau's Influence on Modern Culture
C. “Brain Rot” : A Warning from the Past D. The Oxford Word of 2024 and Its Significance
