Dear Professor Smith,
My name is Li Hua. Representing our school, I’m writing to convey my sincere gratitude
to you for the lecture concerning body language you gave last week.
Through your lecture, we have learned that body language can be used to convey our
feelings when it comes to communication. For example, smiling is the most universal language
of happiness. However, not all cultures greet people in the same way. Just like spoken
language, body language varies from culture to culture.
I do believe the knowledge will be very beneficial. Thank you again for your wonderful
lecture.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 Possible version
“No! I don’t understand. I want to keep the flowers forever.” I protested. Noticing my
obvious reluctance, Mom knelt down and petted my face, “I know you do, sweetie. But in
the end, you’ll understand that every drop of kindness you give away returns to you in
another way. Just wait and see.” So later that afternoon, we cut most of the flowers from the
garden, tied them with colored ribbons, wrapped them in colored paper, and then placed
them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh overnight. Afterward, I headed to bed, but all
night the uneasiness of losing those beautiful flowers gripped my heart, making it hard for
me to fall asleep.
Shortly after dawn the next morning, we began our journey through the neighborhood.
At each house, we hid behind our neighbors’ bushes. I ran to the front door, left the basket
and then rang the doorbell, giggling as I ran for cover. When I saw our neighbors’ faces
cracked into delighted smiles because of those anonymous May baskets, a surge of pride and
happiness flooded in waves. My mother was right—every drop of kindness you give away
returns to you in another way.

(Text 1)
W: I made a reservation for an early flight to Hong Kong tomorrow.
M: Really? I thought the meeting didn’t start until next Monday.
W: It doesn’t. I am going a bit early so that I can get myself organized for the big speech I have
to make.
(Text 2)
M: Hello. I want to know something. Is it possible for a foreign business organization to get a
loan from a local bank?
W: I’ll refer you to the bank manager. Please hold on.
M: Sure.
(Text 3)
M: Today’s special is roasted beef and onion soup.
W: No, thanks. Just give me a coffee and chocolate cake.
(Text 4)
M: Your drawings are beautiful.
W: You really think so?
M: I do. It would take me forever to draw even one of them.
W: There’s nothing to it, really.
(Text 5)
M: The printing company made a mistake, so we have to hand-correct all the brochures. There
must be at least 1,000 copies.
W: Couldn’t we just send the brochures back to the printing company and get them to do the
work?
M: Normally I would, but we just don’t have enough time. The conference is in two days.
(Text 6)
M: Susie, we’re planning to throw a party for Sally in Sales this Friday, which is her last day in
our company. Would you like to join us?
W: I’d love to, but I can’t. My cousin will come to see me this Friday. I promised her that I’d
take her to a new French restaurant that just opened up last Thursday.
M: Why don’t you come by to say goodbye when you finish eating? The party won’t finish
until midnight. It will be held at JJ’s, just across from Oscar Cinema.
(Text 7)
W: Hi, I’m here to pick up running shoes for myself. I’m planning to start to work out next
Monday. I need something light and comfortable.
M: Okay. This model is popular with young women. Why don’t you try them on?
W: They look great to me but I don’t like these colors. Do they come in other colors?
M: Yes, but these are the only ones we have in stock right now. If you don’t mind waiting for a
couple of days, we’d be delighted to place a special order for you. Let me give you our list
for your reference.
(Text 8)
M: What subjects did you take?
W: Physics, chemistry, math and biology.
M: Do you think you’ve passed?
W: I’m sure I’ve passed, but I’m worried about what grades I’ll get. I want to study medicine at
Cambridge University, and they won’t give me a place unless I get three As and a B.
M: Do you think you’ll get them?
W: I don’t know. I think I did OK, but I’m a bit worried about math.
M: When will you get your results?
W: Tomorrow. I’m really nervous.
M: And what will you do if you don’t get the grades you need?
W: I don’t want to think about it. If I don’t get into Cambridge, I suppose I’ll do another year at
school and take the exams again.
M: Well, good luck!
(Text 9)
W: Hello. This is Margaret from Atlantis International. Is this a good time to speak?
M: Yes. How can I help you?
W: I’d like to say that Mr. Chan was impressed with your skills and qualifications. We think
you’re exactly what we’re looking for and would like to offer you the position of Director
of Operations.
M: That’s very good news. I have been following Atlantis International for a couple of years
now, waiting for the right position to become available.
W: That’s very good to hear. What I’m going to do now is send you an offer letter. You’ll also
be contacted by a company called Watchdog Security. They run all our background checks.
How much notice do you need to give?
M: As I told Mr. Chan last week, I have to give three weeks’ notice. That means I’ll be ready to
start by the end of the month.
W: That’s fine. I’m going to post your job offer letter now, and welcome to Atlantis
International.
(Text 10)
M: Thank you for your attention. I hope you’re all looking forward to arriving at the town. I
thought you might like to know a few things while we’re still on the coach — and it’ll help
to pass the time on our journey! OK, as you know, we’re staying at the Park Hotel. We’re
booked in for three nights. Now, I’m aware that not everyone wants breakfast there, so if
you do want it, you should tell the Hotel that you do the night before. We’re making our
own arrangements for dinner each evening. And then I hope you’re going to enjoy the
various activities that are lined up. However, there have been some changes since the
original program. For one, because it’s been under repair and is therefore closed to the
public, we won’t be going to the castle.
However, there’s plenty else to see, and the gardens are still open. Something we’ve been
able to add to the program is for Saturday, when a local historian will give us a lecture on
