How nice are you? Do you give money to homeless people? Do you offer your seat to someone in
need on a bus?
Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while those who have
low self-respect think less of their good qualities. However, a new study says it might not be true,
reported The Guardian.
The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychology() professor from the University of
London, the UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider themselves to be among the nicest
50 percent of the population.
In the study, Freeman first asked some people to rate() their own niceness. Then he got people
to answer questions like “Do you give directions to strangers?” and “Have you ever donated blood?”.
The results showed that people are not as nice as they think they are. Two thirds of them seldom helped
others carry heavy shopping bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood.
In another study by psychologists from universities in Chicago and Virginia, the US, some people
were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been slightly changed to make them appear more
attractive. When asked to pick the unchanged pictures, people usually chose the more attractive ones.
So, why do we think we’re nicer than we actually are? There are many theories. A popular one says
we unconsciously() cheat ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to
ourselves or each other.
How can we solve it? Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback( 反 馈 ). Compare
others’ opinion toward yourself with your own and you will see a clearer picture.
4. What did the new study find?
A. The more confident people are, the more good qualities they have.
B. Most of the people with low-respect are not nice.
C. People with great confidence do not like those with low-respect.

For 300 years, the Slims River had been flowing through Canadas Yukon region. But last year, in
only four days, the water in the big river reduced sharply, which made the river almost disappear. What
happened?
After a year of careful studies, a group of scientists recently said that the sudden change of the
river was caused by climate change. The Slims River used to be a big river, reaching up to 150 metres at
its widest points. It carried melt water from the huge Kaskawulsh glacier() into the Kluane River,
theninto the Yukon River toward the Bering Sea.
But in spring 2016, there was a sharp melting of the Kaskawulsh glacier because of climate change.
It made the melt water run in a different direction, and into a second river, the Alsek River, then into the
Gulfof Alaska. It is thousands of kilometers away.
In geography, this is called “river piracy”. Although itwas notunusual in ancient times, this is the
first time it has happened under scientists’ noses in modern times. TheSlims River is almost dry now,
which also takes away the clean air in theregion because strong wind blows upallthe dust in the river
bed. Fish have already swum to other rivers. And sheep from Kluane National Park are now coming
down toeatthe fresh plants.
LonnieThompson, a scientist from Ohio StateUniversity, the US,said that we could hardly feel
theeffects of climatechange inour daily life, but the case oftheSlims Rivershows what will happen
when gradualtemperatureincreases.
7. Why did theSlimsRiver almost disappear?
A. Because the airpollutionbrought moreraintoYukon region.
B. Becausetheclimatesuddenly became hotter thanbefore.
C.Because thehuman activities destroyed the banksof the river.
D. Because theKaskawulsh glacier did not exist any longer.
