In the first half of the 19th century in the United States, Christmas was a very different kind of holiday from it
is today. Christmas was not even a holiday yet.
So, people around the country celebrated the day in different ways, Some thought it was an important day for
the birth of Jesus( ). Some celebrated the day with parties, music, drinking and eating. And, others did not
celebrate the day at all.
In 1819, the popular American writer Washington Irving wrote a series of five articles in a book called “The
Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.”The articles tell us a rich British man invited his farm workers into his
home to celebrate Christmas.
Irving thought this looking back to old traditions is very good. He liked the idea of different people coming
together to enjoy a happy and peaceful holiday. Later, many immigrants brought Christmas traditions from their
own countries. They celebrated Christmas in their ways. For example, German(德国的) immigrants brought their
tradition of putting lights, sweets and toys on the green trees placed in their homes. Many American homes
learned about this tradition of setting up a Christmas tree soon.
Many new American Christmas songs started to become popular. For example, in 1849, a famous person
from Massachusetts wrote the words to “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” The song “Jingle Bells” appeared(
