三、重点语法鉴赏

表示推测的情态动词

1．在英语中，有些情态动词可以用来表示“推测”，这些单词主要有 must，can，could，may，might 等。

might 和could 在表示对现在情况的推测时不表示时态，其推测程度不如 may 和can 大；

must 意为“肯定，一定”，可能性最大；can 意为“可能”，可能性比 could 大；

may 意为“也许，可能”，可能性比 might 大。

eg：He must be at home.他肯定在家。

Can he be at home？他可能在家吗？

He could be at home.他可能在家。

He may be at home.他也许在家。

He might be at home.他或许在家。

【注意】can 表示推测时，通常只用于否定句或疑问句中，一般不用于肯定句。

eg：He can't be over sixty.他不可能有 60 多岁。

2．除了情态动词可以表示推测外，一些形容词和副词也可以用来表示推测，如：

possible，probably，perhaps，maybe 等。其中 perhaps 和maybe 多置于句首。

常见的句式有 It is possible to do sth.，It is possible that…，主语＋will probably/possibly＋v.等。

eg：It's possible that it will be snowy.有可能会下雪。

It's possible to swim across the river.游过这条河是有可能的。

It will probably/possibly be cold and wet.也许天气会又冷又潮。

Maybe we can ask for some help.或许我们可以寻求一些帮助。

1. probably 的用法

(1)probably 为副词,意为“可能;或许”。

如: It was probable that he left his book on the chair.他可能把书忘在椅子上了。

2.joke 的用法

(1)joke 作动词,意为“开玩笑;说笑话”。
