The Spirit of Christmas
Many would agree that when we think of Christmas, we probably think of gifts,Christmas trees and Santa
Claus But behind all these things lies the true meaning of Christmas: the importance of sharing and giving love and
joy to people around us. The story in A Christmas Carol is perhaps the best example of this.
A Christmas Carol is a famous short novel written by Charles Dickens. It is about an old man named Scrooge
who never laughs or smiles. He is mean and only thinks about himself. He doesn't treat others nicely. He just cares
about whether he can make more money and he hates Christmas. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge sees the ghost of
Jacob Marley, his dead business partner. Marley used to be just like Scrooge, so he was punished after he died. He
warns Scrooge to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him. He also tells Scrooge to expect three
spirits to visit him.
That night, three ghosts visit Scrooge. First, the Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood and
reminds Scrooge of his happier days as a child.Then the second spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Present, takes him to
see how others are spending Christmas this year. Everyone is happy, even poor people. The last one, the Ghost of
Christmas Yet to Come, takes him to the future.Scrooge sees that he is dead, but nobody cares. He is so scared that
he wakes up in his bed and finds out it is only the next morning -Christmas Day!
He decides to change his life and promises to be a better person. He happily celebrates Christmas with his
relatives. He also gives gifts to people in need.
He now treats everyone with kindness and warmth spreading love and joy everywhere he goes. And that is the
true spirit of Christmas

1. treat vt.
(1) 对待;看待;把…看作 + as / like
Do not treat this serious matter as a joke.不要把这件严肃的事当玩笑。

This book treats of economic problems.这本书探讨经济问题。
(2) 谈判;协商 + for / with.
Is it necessary that we treat with that country? 我们是否有必要与那个国家谈判?
(3) 请客 I’ll treat today. 今天我请客。

It’s a great treat for them to go to the theater. 他们去看戏真是乐事。

We have win the game, and not give others any chance to laugh at us. 咱们一定要赢,别让人笑话咱们。
I used to making fun of her painting. 我以前常拿她的画作开玩笑。

3.定语从句
who 为关系代词,在定语从句中充当主语成分,可用 that 替代,定语从句用来修饰先行词。who 在从句中
充当什么成分,要看它所处的位置起什么作用。
The man who / that is standing under the tree is my English teacher.
那个站在树底下的人是我的英语老师。
关系代词 who 和that 的选择:
关系代词 who 和that 都可以指人,但使用场合有区别。 é
(一)关系代词 who 的使用场合 é
1.who 可以代表人、人格化了的动物、神话故事中的人物或有生命的事物。如: é
1)The dog who is barking is our pet.正在叫的那条狗是我们的宠物。
2)Those who want to go please sign their names here.想去的人在此签名。
2.在从句中,作主语倾向于用 who。如: é
1)The girl who dances beautifully gave us a performance that day.那个跳舞很漂亮的女孩那天给我们进行
了表演。
2)Do you know the person who spoke just now? é 你认识刚才说话的人吗?
