第一节:
Dear Phil,
I’m sorry to learn from the Internet that your hometown was struck by the tornado the
day before yesterday. According to the video of the report, so strong was the tornado that
it brought about a lot of losses. Many houses were destroyed and worse still, many people
were injured or some were even killed.
Seeing the disaster, I have been worried about you and your family. I'm anxious to
know your present situation. Please tell me what you experienced these days. I hope that
everything is all right for you.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours, Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom
full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During
the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do. In the
evening, I was a hardworking student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda
and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, and my grades
steadily improved.
Paragraph 2:
Linda and I saw each other through all these years. When I was down, Linda
encouraged me. “Mom, you can’t quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her.
I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up.
At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be
class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my
dreams was eventually finished.

1. W: I can’t believe how nice it is outside. We sure have been lucky with the
weather. Let’s take a walk to the park.
M: And do what? Fly a kite? I’d rather just stay home and play on the Internet.
2. M: Now, Sophie…you will love skiing, but you must have the right clothes. Do
you have gloves?
W: Yes, Uncle Steve, and a scarf. You gave them to me at Christmas, remember?
M: Oh, yes! I had forgotten. You will need sunglasses for the snow as well.
W: All right. I am going shopping this evening, so I will buy a pair then.
3. W: Excuse me. Do you know where the Admiral Hotel is?
M: I can’t say that I do. Why don’t you walk over and ask that taxi driver? He
should know.
4. W: Calm down, sir. Where were you last Tuesday evening? And who were you
with?
M: I was staying in a hotel in Brighton. I was with my wife, Joan.
W: What was the name of the hotel?
M: The George and Dragon.
5. M: I can’t wait until my birthday this weekend.
W: Me too. Are you having a giant cake this year?
M: Yes, and hopefully, I get a lot of gifts. My parents have planned out the whole
party already. And I know my
friends are preparing to give me a big surprise.
6. W: Hey, I think Samantha just came in.
M: Uh…really?
W: Yes. She is here! You should go talk to her.
M: Ah…no, I wouldn’t know what to say.
W: Oh, come on. Everyone knows you like her. Go ask her to dance.
M: Um…maybe later.
W: You have been saying that for years! We just graduated! This is your last
chance.
M: You are right. Fine, I’ll do it.
7. W: What have you been up to lately?
M: Just spending a lot of time with my girlfriend.
W: Oh, nice. Do you two have any plans for Valentine’s Day? Go see a film?
M: No, I’m taking her out to dinner at a nice restaurant.
W: She’ll love that.
M: I hope so. I want to do something else special for her, too.
W: Like what?
M: I don’t know. Do you have any romantic ideas?
W: Hmm…you could always write her a poem.
M: Great idea! It’s much better than a piece of jewelry that might break or get lost.
W: Definitely.
M: So, what are you doing with your boyfriend this Valentine’s Day?
W: We’re going to the Taylor Swift concert. We both love her so much.
M: Sounds fun.
8. M: Hi. I’d like to get my hair cut.
W: Well, can we interest you in today’s special? We’ll shampoo, cut, and style
your hair for one unbelievable low
price of $12.
M: Okay, but I just want to get my hair cut a little bit. A little off the top and sides,
that’s all.
W: No problem. Okay, here we go. So, what do you do for a living?
M: I’m a lawyer, and I’m in town for a job interview, and…
W: Oops.
M: What do you mean oops? Hey, can I see a mirror?
W: Nothing to worry about, sir. Relax.
M: Ouch. That really hurt! What are you doing anyway? Oh, look at all my hair on
the floor. How much are you
really cutting off?
W: Relax. Time for the shampoo.
M: Hey, you got shampoo in my eyes! Where’s towel? Oh, gosh, you cut my hair
too short. I want to talk to the
manager…now!
W: I’m sorry, but he’s on vacation.
M: Ugh!
9. M: What were you like when you were my age?
W: That was a long time ago. I was a lot like you, actually. I loved art, and I took
dance lessons.
M: I like art, too.
W: I know you do. I have hung a lot of your paintings up in the living room. I was
also very shy, and I didn’t
make friends very easily. Do you want to see some photos of me when I was little?
M: Yeah!
W: Here I am on Easter Sunday. Look at my silly hat! And here I am with the
family dog, Buttons. He was so
sweet. Oh, look, this is me with your mother when she was little. She looks just like
you!
M: I think she looks just like you.
W: She does look like me. I’m her mother, after all.
M: When did you meet me?
W: When you were born! I was at the hospital when your mother had you, and I
was the third person to hold you.
Your grandfather was the fourth. He would be very proud of you if he were still with
us today. You’re a
