In China, children like to make promises by hooking pinkies with each other. They say,
"A pinkie promise must be 11 for 100 years." Then they may press their thumbs together
to complete the promise. Sometimes, 12 will hook pinkies and promise to be together
forever.
There are many theories on the origin of the pinkie promise. Some say it comes from a
nursery rhyme(童谣) . 13 say it was introduced from the West—born out of a love story
where a man and a woman hooked fingers.
One theory is that it may have 14 to do with the role of fingers in Chinese culture.
The Chinese character for "finger" also means "aim()" (referring to people's thoughts). So
hooking fingers can be seen as the exchanging of 15 .
Therefore, the fingers play a(n) 16 role in making an oath(盟约): They can not only
be used to complete a promise, but also be cut for making a blood oath. When someone
swears to heaven, he uses his 17 to point to the sky.
18 , hooking fingers means making a serious promise. In some movies, a person who
breaks a promise may have his little finger cut 19 ! Of course, this kind of thing is not very
likely to happen in real life. But we can still see 20 important “pinkie promises” can be.
So next time, when you hook pinkies with someone, you'd better be careful with your

三、阅读单选
On Feb 26, when an Italian lawmaker went into the country’s Lower Chamber with a
mask (口罩) to prevent the novel coronavirus (新冠病毒), he was questioned and criticized
by others as they thought that wearing masks would cause unnecessary fear and panic. You
might be surprised, as in China and other Asian countries, people have willingly put masks on
during the outbreak (爆发).
In the west, people are taught to wear masks only when they get sick. They thought
masks are seen as a tool to protect sick people and prevent the disease from spreading, so
healthy people don’t need to wear them. According to a survey done by Global Times among
some European and American people, wearing a mask in public can make them feel
“worried” and “afraid of being looked at differently”.
But as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow in the world, things start to
change. In the US, for example, the need for masks is very high now. The US surgeon general
has been asking people not to buy too many masks, as they are more needed in hospitals than
the public.
In Japan, wearing masks has long been seen as a manner to comfort others when one
catches a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion, with different colors and
patterns to match their clothes.
In more cultures in Asia, wearing masks might also be a symbol of solidarity (团结)
during the outbreak, according to Lynteris. People wear masks to show that they want to stick
together in the face of danger.
21The underlined word “panic” in Paragraph 1 means __________.
Adeath Bdanger Cillness Dworries
22Westerners refuse to wear masks because they __________.
Aare afraid to look ugly with face masks Bdon’t think healthy people need masks
Chope to comfort other people in this way Ddon’t want others to know they are ill
23The example of the US in Paragraph 3 is to show __________.
Athe cost of masks is high in the US Bdifferent people have different choices
Cwestern people are changing their ideas Dwearing masks has become fashionable
24The passage mainly tells us __________.
Athe ways how COVID-19 spreads Bthe reasons why westerners hate masks
Cthe symbol of solidarity in Asia Dthe cultural differences in mask wearing
