I know my brother better than anyone else in the world. Since the moment of his birth, I’ve
been part of his life. I had spent seven happy years in the world with the attention of those around
me. But when Rohan was born, life changed. All of a sudden, I had to share my toys with him and
there were no more bedtime stories or my own choice of food.
1
Finally, I hated this little boy. The poor baby had no idea what had made me so unhappy.
Maybe he found me strange, the only person in this house who did not like him. Whatever the
reason was, he loved following me around. However, I seldom talked to him and always asked
him to leave me alone.
Then all that changed. I hardly remember everything of that day six years ago, but I do
remember that I was feeling very angry. Then I found myself in my brother’s room. I couldn’t help
reaching out my hand through the bars of his bed. At once, he reached his small hand and softly
touched mine. And that was all I needed. Through all the unhappiness of the day, that one moment
changed everything. How could I hate someone who made me feel so important? For the first
time, I saw my brother through the eyes of a sister. Suddenly I realized love from my family was
always with me.
To this day, I can’t imagine life without my brother. It is unbelievable how much I have
learned about life from a seven-year-old boy. Above all, Rohan has taught me that one should not
care only for himself.

Dear Karen,
As you probably know, it’s my sister Suzie’s 16th birthday in a week. We’re planning a
surprise party for her. Julie is going to pick her up from school as usual on Friday, but she will not
take her home. She will bring her to the Palace Hotel, the big modern one near the station. We’re
going to have a meal there and we’ve also hired the ballroom for a party in the evening. I hope
you can come!
All her friends from school are coming and quite a few of the people from our village, too. Of
course, Mum and Dad are coming up from England and I’ve managed to persuade my other sister,
Marie, to come over from Australia. She will bring her kids with her, too.
After the party we’re going to have another one on Saturday! Well, not really a party. We will
invite the family and some close friends (that includes you) for a meal at home. If the weather is
nice, we’d like to have a barbecue in the garden. Julie is going to make a special cake for Suzie.
Anyway, we hope to make it a really special weekend for Suzie. On Sunday we’re all going
for a walk in the country. You know how she loves walking and we’re all going to need a bit of
exercise after all that lovely food. We’re hoping to go up to the lake. Marie said she wanted her
kids to feed the ducks just like Suzie and she did when they were very young. I’m sure Suzie will
love that, too.
It would be great if you could come over for the weekend. We would all love to see you.
Let me know as soon as you can!
Best,
David
