studied at home instead of going to school then.
Some people think Edith began writing because she found the people around her so boring. Others

“This is what everyone in London is talking about now.”
Three years later, her first novel (小说), The Valley of Decision, came out. Three years after that,
her novel The House of Mirth came out. In 1920, she published The Age of Innocence and it won

Do you want to be a teacher? What characteristics ( 品质)make a great teacher? Let’s have a
look!
Knowing the students well
Great teachers always know their students’ needs. When children are crying for their parents and
don’t want to join the class on their first day at kindergarten, a great teacher should sit with them
till (直到) they calm down. In middle school or high school, students learn about not only their
school subjects, but also themselves. A great teacher should be patient, understanding and able to
talk with them. And when they are confused, a great teacher can show them the right direction.
_______________
No teachers can be great without loving what they do. It’s easy to love teaching when things are
going well, but teaching isn’t always easy. Teachers sometimes have their bad days. Great teachers
should be patient and continue trying to help their students when they face difficulties.
Being creative (有创造力的)
Creativity can always interest students. People can still remember some special moments in their
classroom after they leave school. They remember that a teacher turned a poem into a song. They
remember the fun group activities better than exercises for testing their knowledge. Snowing
students something they haven’t seen before is the best way to make students remember it.
There are many characteristics that make a great teacher, and the most important characteristic of a
great teacher is the ability ( 能 力 ) to bring out the best in students. Great teachers believe to
students will be successful someday. If we can learn these characteristics, then maybe we can
become teachers too.
