期末考试完型填空押题二
When I was about twelve, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my weakness.Week
by week her list grew: I was very thin, I was not a 1 student, I talked too much, I was too
proud, and so on. I tried to bear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my
father with 2 in my eyes.
He wiped my tears and listened to me 3 , and then he asked. "Are the things she says true
or not? Janet, didn't you ever 4 what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion.
Go and make a list of 5 she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other
things she said."
I did as he told me. To my great 6 , I discovered that about half the things were true. Some
of them I couldn't 7 (like being very thin), but a good number I could-and suddenly I wanted
to change. For the first time I went to a fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. "That's just for you," he said. "You
know better than anyone else the 8 about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just
close your ears in anger and 9 hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will
be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears.
Listen to them all, but 10 the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do."
Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a
better piece of advice.

During lifetime, there's going to be that one time in your life when you feel like telling a
lie. First, you are 11 afraid of getting in trouble. Second, you’re embarrassed that you hide the
12 , so you tell a lie.
It’s never okay to tell a lie about something even if it’s not 13 . You shouldn’t lie because
there is always a 14 that will follow behind the lie. And it could 15 you in a serious
situation. If you really enjoy 16 friends, you have to be honest. 17 it could cause trouble,
even it could make you lose your friends.
As an adult, for example, if you lie to your friends there is a 100% chance that you have lost
18 trust. So when you do tell the truth it won’t matter because they won’t believe you unless
they hear it from someone else who proved them 19 . Or they won’t believe you any more.
There is a way that you could let others trust you again, but it’s a really hard way. Because it
takes time for them to 20 you again. Remember an old English saying, “honesty is the best
policy”.
