We will start from the spring season. The reason we start here is that spring is the season of beginnings. Many animals are
born in spring, and plants start growing. The weather starts to get warm. The days start getting long. There is usually more rain
too. This is good weather for plants to start growing.
Summer is after spring. The sun is shining directly at our side of the earth, the Northern Hemisphere ( 北半球) . This
means the days are longer and that the weather is hot. Baby animals are growing, and many plants are growing and flowering.
Autumn is the next season. During autumn, the Northern Hemisphere begins to move away from the sun. Because of this,
the weather gets cold. The days get short. In autumn, the leaves change colour and fall of the trees. Animals prepare for winter
by collecting food.
The winter season is the last. In winter, the Northern Hemisphere is away from the sun. This means that it is colder and
that the days are shorter. In some places, it snows. There are few leaves on the trees, and many plants die. Some animals
hibernate (冬眠) , because there is not much food. Some animals also grow long fur coats to keep warm.

In China, when you refuse someone, people might say he or she eats a bowl of door-closing thick soup. In Chinese, it is
called "吃闭门羹". What is the story behind this saying?
It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there lived a beautiful woman named Shi Feng. Many young men wanted to marry
her. But Shi was hard to impress. She asked her admirers ( 追求者) to write poems and show them to her. She did this to see
how talented they were.
If Shi liked someone’s poems, she would agree to meet him. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t meet him. But then, to be polite,
she would at least give him a bowl of "geng" to eat.
"Geng" is a type of thick soup. It is usually made with grain, fruit or vegetables.
As time passed, "eating a bowl of thick soup" came to mean "being refused". The dish was also nicknamed "door-closing
thick soup", since Shi would not open her door for the people who received the dish.
But there is a twist () to this story. "Door-closing thick soup" was said to be so tasty that more people started coming
to Shi’s door—not to marry her, but to have a taste of the soup!

Jack’s week started badly.
"Where is your homework?" asked Mr Fish, the history teacher, on Monday morning.
Everyone turned to look at Jack
"I did my homework at the weekend but I forgot it this morning. I can bring it to school tomorrow. "
"Well, make sure you do," said Mr Fish.
When he got home, Jack thought about doing his history homework. But then he played a computer game with his brother
Jim, and then he started watching TV, so he forgot all about it.
On Tuesday morning, Jack’s friends, Liam and Tom, were waiting for him at the gate of the school. They looked upset.
"What’s up?" asked Jack.
"Jason and his friends took our football away," answered Liam.
Jack walked over to Jason and asked for the football. They laughed at him. So Jack became angry and had a fight with
them. Mr Green, the art teacher, saw them and they all got into trouble for fighting.
