More than 60 per cent of children and teens do not get enough sleep, which can
put their health at risk, according to a report by the Chinese Sleep Research Society.
Nearly 63 per cent of Chinese youths ages 6 to 17 sleep less than eight hours a
day, according to the report. Among 13 to 17-year-olds the number is more than 81
per cent. The report was based on a survey at the end of last year and in January. It
covered nearly 70, 000 children and teens ages 6 to 17 all over China.
The report found that two top causes influenced students’ sleep. From Monday to
Thursday, 64 per cent of the group would still be busy with their homework after 11
p.m.. More than 4l per cent of children and teenagers who sleep too little use
computers and mobile phones.
The survey also showed that good sleep makes study effective( ). Some
students who sleep longer generally finish homework in two to three hours. Some
other students may require four to six hours because they sleep less. Zhao Zhongxin, a
professor studying sleep disorders, said, “Sleep helps growth, protects the brain and
makes the immune system(免疫系统) better. Long-term loss of sleep will bring risks
of disease and cause lasting health damage.”
Some specialists suggested that local education authorities all over China take
action to help students get more sleep, including putting off the start of morning
classes by half an hour.

World Sleep Day, observed on 21 March, was created to make people realize the
growing number of sleep problems worldwide. Sleep is a natural part of human life,
1
but many people in the modern world ignore() its importance. As a result, sleep
problems are increasingly common.
In 2019, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece did a survey of over
35,000 people in ten countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South
Africa. According to the survey, 24 percent said that they found it hard to have a good
sleep. And based on their responses, 31.6 percent were diagnosed( 诊 断 ) with
insomnia() and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline insomnia.
Besides, 30.7 percent reported visiting a doctor for help with sleep problems. And
11.6 percent said they had a feeling of needing sleep during the day.
The main causes leading to these problems are stress from school or work and a
fast pace of life. Noise pollution and light pollution also cause poor-quality sleep. The
findings of the survey are worrying because large numbers of people can’t sleep well
at night.
Overall, the survey showed that poor-quality sleep influences many people. Some
can’t fall asleep and they often wake up in the middle of the night. If this happens for
a long time, there is a possibility that sleepless people will get fatter and have a heart
attack.
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you
should have good sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time
each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark and quiet place to sleep
so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also keep away
from things with caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as
caffeine may keep you from sleeping.
Getting a good night’s sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice
above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while
those who have low self-esteem () think less of their good qualities. However, a
new study says it might not be true, reported The Guardian.
The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychology (心理学) professor from
the University of London, UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider
themselves to be among the nicest 50 percent of the population.
In the study, Freeman first asked some people to rate ( ) their own niceness.
Then he got people to answer questions like “Do you give directions to strangers?”
and “Have you ever donated blood?”. The results showed that people are not as nice
as they think they are. Two thirds of them seldom helped others carry heavy shopping
bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood.
In another study by psychologists from universities in Chicago and Virginia, US,
some people were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been slightly
changed to make them appear more attractive. When asked to pick the unchanged
pictures, people usually chose the more attractive ones.
So, why do we think we’re nicer than we actually are?
There are many theories (). A popular one says we unconsciously (无意识地)
deceive () ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to
ourselves or each other.
How can we solve it? Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback (
). Compare others’ opinion toward yourself with your own and you will see a
clearer picture.
