I have been a staff writer for the school newspaper, the Dagligtale, since my first day
here at the University of Alberta. I probably won’t work as a journalist after my graduation,
but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism has been useless. In fact, I have
picked up many important skills through this job.
I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team.
I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was frightened. Talking to
strangers was one of my fears. But I gathered my courage and did it. I talked to the students,
the players and the team leader. It was something I had never dreamed of doing before. This
opportunity gave me confidence and helped me to improve my social skills.
In journalism, everything has to be based on facts. As a student journalist, I have learned
to do research and to think critically about what I read. Discovering the facts is important
when you are writing for the school newspaper, but in the Information Age, this is also an
increasingly useful skill in everyday life.
As a student journalist, I always know that I have a lot to learn. I’m never afraid of
asking people for feedback (反馈意见). I have learned how not to take negative (负面的)
feedback personally and how to use it to make improvements to myself.
Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity
to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller, student and citizen. If you are
ever given a chance to write for a campus newspaper or magazine, take it and learn
everything you can!

E-mail messages from Vietnam (越南)
Message 1: March 24th
Hi everybody,
Greetings from Vietnam! We arrived here tired, but excited. This is our first trip to Asia
and the friendliness of the people is amazing. All the different sights and smells make us
eager to try the food. We are looking forward to eating Vietnamese food for dinner tonight.
Our hotel is cheap, but very clean. The owners are friendly and helpful. They have told us
about some places that we shouldn’t miss. We plan to stay here in Ho Chi Minh City for a few
days, and then travel to the north.
Message 2: March 27th
Hi everybody,
Vietnam is fantastic! The different Buddha statues (佛像) are wonderful to look at. We
visited the market in Cholon. Everything there was so colourful, and we took lots of
photographs! Later today we will take the train north. We’ll stay in Hanoi for two days, and
then catch a bus to Sapa. We’re going to go hiking in the mountains.
Message 3: April 4th
Hi everybody,
Now we’re in the old capital city of Hue. After hiking around the mountains, it’s nice to
have accommodation with electricity and a shower to have a good rest! Our trip to Sapa was
long and tiring. From there, we took a bus to a small village in the mountains, where we met
some hill tribe (部落) people who live a simple life—no electricity or telephones. They are
the kindest, friendliest people I’ve ever met. Everyone smiled and said “hello” to us. This
afternoon, we’re taking a walking tour in Hue. We’re going to visit the Forbidden Purple City,
where the king and queen once lived.
Message 4: April 6th
Hi everybody,
Hue is really a wonderful city with lots of things to see. I would love to stay longer, but
we’re ready for the beach. Tomorrow we’ll take the train back to the south, and then we’re
going to a town called Vung Tau. It has several beaches, and it’s famous for seashells.
Vietnam is an amazing country, with so much variety—big modern cities and small
traditional towns, mountains, forests and the seashore. Three weeks here just isn’t enough.
7The writer was eager to enjoy ________ first in the city when they arrived in Vietnam.
Athe sights Bthe price Cthe food Dsome places
8The writer thinks the market in Cholon is ________.
Anoisy Bdull Cstrange Dbeautiful
