When I was in the seventh grade, I had problems behaving. My heart was in the right place, but I couldn't always
follow the rules. I played many tricks on my schoolmates. Once, I even pulled a girl's hair on the school bus to get
her attention. As a result, I was repeatedly sent to the office of the headmaster. Although 1 hated going there, I did
nor hate the headmaster, Mr. Smith.
Mr. Smith was a kind, elderly man. When he punished me for putting some ants into a classmate's pencil box, it
didn't hurt at all, but it did hurt my feelings. I thought so much of him and moments like that seemed to prove I was
hopelessly bad.
When I was called to Mr. Smith's office for the sixth time, I had no idea what I had done. I felt disappointed as I
walked down there. I went into his office, sat down, and looked at the floor. Then he said the last thing I expected to
hear. "Kevin, I've heard you've been behaving really well lately. I want you to know how proud I am of you, and I
just called you down to my office to give you a peppermint."
"Really?" I was surprised.
"Yes. Now you can take that peppermint and go back to class."
I carried the peppermint with me as if it was a gold coin. When I got into my classroom, I bragged( 吹嘘) to my
classmates about nay turn around, excitedly. I wasn't so bad after all.
Mr. Smith was really kind. He made me realize that I was just a kid who had problems with behavior. He bought
some peppermints and took the time to notice me when I got something anything-right. Mr. Smith gave me some
hope by giving me some love. I will just remember him for the rest of my life.

There are not enough Chinese language teachers in the world. It has become a big problem. Didi Dawis, the
president of the Indonesia Fujian Association( 印 尼 福 建 商 会 ), said Indonesia has only about 1 ,000 Chinese
teachers.
"With increasing trade and communication between China and Indonesia, more and more companies from the
two countries have established language offices. These new companies need a large number of people who are good
at Chinese," he said.
Didi Dawis hoped that China would take Indonesia's language needs into consideration and send more Chinese
teachers.
In recent years, the Chinese language has become more and more popular worldwide. The United States
government also noticed the importance of Chinese language. In New York and California, it has become the
second language of many students. In the future, more and more schools will open Chinese courses, so they need
many high-level Chinese teachers.
China is working out many ways to solve the problem. President Xi Jinping said during his visit to the US in

Smile Train is a charity( 慈善团体) that helps the millions of children around the world, who suffer from a
facial defect(缺陷). The defect happens when a baby’s top lip or mouth doesn’t form properly before birth. Eating
and drinking is very difficult for these babies. The charity provides free operations, which give these children a new
smile, and with it, new hope and a new beginning.
Children with the defect need all the help. Although many sufferers are accepted by their families, sadly,
others are not. In some countries, children with this defect are often abandoned at birth because their parents feel
ashamed of them or cannot afford the operations. The good news is that the operation is not difficult. It takes less
than an hour and costs the family nothing. The charity raises money and finds the right medical volunteers to
perform the operations.
A Smile Train doctor from the UK said,“Each child who has the operation is given a second chance at life.
After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to school and be happy. Every year I perform hundreds
of operations free of cost through Smile Train. Some of the stories I have heard are quite surprising. One newborn
baby girl was found abandoned on a train. Luckily for her, she was found and adopted( 收养)by a passenger. This
lady then heard about Smile Train and brought the baby to our hospital. I did the operation and gave hope to the
family. Experienced doctors like me share our skills with local doctors. In this way we make sure that these
operations will always be available.”
1.Smile Train is a charity which .
A.provides food and medical care for poor children
B.raises money for all the doctors working in the UK
C.offers free medical help to children with the facial defect
D.gives children without parents new hope and a new beginning
2.The underlined word “abandoned” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to .
A.given up B.dressed up
C.called up D.brought up
3.What did the doctor from the UK think of his volunteer work?
A.Dangerous. B.Surprising.
C.Relaxing. D.Valuable.
4.It can be inferred from the passage that .
A.children with the facial defect are becoming more ashamed than before
B.more doctors are trained to help children with the facial defect
C.fewer baby boys with the facial defect are operated on than girls
D.doctors in Smile Train are always well paid for doing the operations
D
Are you shy?If you are,you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy.Almost 80 percent of
people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now,scientists
are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These
babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies.Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy
parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well.Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They
found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often
bullied( 欺 侮 )by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy.At the same time, children with no
brothers and sisters may be shy as well.Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn
the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different
countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy.But in Israel, only one of three
people said so.What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of
failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their
failure. In Israel, the opposite is true.Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends,or
bad luck.In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk-taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less
about failure and are less shy.
