Pictures of Thanksgiving in the United States usually show happy families with big turkeys
in the center. At my house, that moment lasts maybe 10 seconds.

Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November each year. People go back to their
hometown to greet their friends and family.
On Thursday morning, the family members are busy cooking the big meal. If the weather is
bad – as it always is – families stay at home. By noon, my aunt Karla has too much wine and
people are hungry, but it takes time to cook a turkey. When dinner is ready around 2:00 pm,
everyone says something they are thankful for. I’m always thankful that someone takes the wine
away from Aunt Karla.
This is when things heat up (变热闹). My uncle talks about his kids. Aunt Karla finds another
bottle of wine. Grandma says that she makes better pumpkin pie. By the time we finish the pie, the
house feels too small?
With Aunt Karla falling asleep on the sofa, we leave quickly to the theater. It’s always full of
people on Thanksgiving. I guess my family isn’t so different from the rest!

Homework might be many kids’ least favorite part of school. It seems that Chinese kids have to
do a lot of homework.
My friends, for example, have two children who go to school in China. They both have at least
three hours of homework a night – when I was growing up, I almost never had more than an hour.

The way we do homework seems to be different as well. In Chinese schools, there is a lot of
memorization (背诵). We do this in the US as well, but we do more “out of the box” thinking,
especially in some subjects, such as English. For example, we would write our own poems or
short stories. We’d have to come up with the characters and plots (情节).
But then again, Chinese students usually do better than US students in maths. Some say it is
because they spend more time memorizing things, such as formulas. They can help Chinese
students do maths exercises.
