Every year, more than 2,600 children arrive in Britain. We ask some new arrivals what they
like best about their new lives and what's different from home.
Jarek, Poland
I don't know anybody from Poland here; but
I'm lucky because the English boy next door is
very friendly and kind. We are in the same
class! I like teachers here. At home, the
teachers seem a bit strict and serious. There
are a lot of rules, too. Here, teachers are
patient and don't give much homework. We
students go out of school and buy pizza or
burgers at lunchtime. We can't do that in
Poland.
Daisy & Luck, the USA
My sister and I like living here. It's cool!
My sister loves the British accent( 口音).
Everybody here is very polite. But we don't
understand all the strange words we say
"yard' not "garden", and "apartment" not
"flat". ' The food is better here. There's
Chinese, Indian and Thai. At home we eat too
much fast food.
Zinah, India
It's too cold here! I hate doing sports,
especially outside in winter. The teacher here
is very serious about sports. I prefer science
and maths. I love the maths class because the
teacher is really funny, just like my maths
teacher in India. The school is so big and some
students seem unfriendly. I'm from a small
1
village school. I think it's hard to
communicate with them.

( )26. In Zinah's eyes, her maths teacher in India might be_______.
A. cold B. strict C. patient D. humorous
( )27. The material is probably taken from______.
A. a travel magazine B. an education website
C. a geography textbook D. a business newspaper
B
There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their
homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and
cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and
waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favourite relatives. These are the simple
village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always travelled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I had been on a
train. I didn't specially relish the long train journey and had brought along some magazines to read
and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read
my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was
just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried
past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles
of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive. I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and
decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to
me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my
watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train stopped at Butterworth. I looked at the
people around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my
arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and
2
then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.
( )28. What's the meaning of the underlined word "relish" in the second paragraph?
A. Choose. B. Enjoy. C. Prepare for. D. Carry on.
( )29. Where was the writer going?
A. Johore Baru. B. The Causeway. C. Butterworth. D. Singapore.
( )30. What can we learn from the story?
A. Comfort in travelling by train. B. Pleasure of living in the country
C. Reading gives people happiness. D. Smiles cheer people up.
C
Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels. Today we will look at
some of them from Lewis Carroll's famous novel "Alice in Wonderland" in detail.
The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds
herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange
words. Alice chases(追赶) him, and that is where her adventures begin.
In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in
a misleading situation.
Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a confusing(令人困惑的)situation. However,
usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of
distraction(分神). It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.
Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares( 野
兔) have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating( 交配) season.
Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is
completely mad, or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy. Of
the two, mad as a Hatter is more common. But don't tell the March Hare. Who knows how he will
react(反应) !
Near the end of the story, Alice meets the Queen of Hearts. A woman who is called a Queen
of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.
( ) 31. Which of the following situations best fits the expression to fall down a rabbit hole ?
