From July 1, 2019, people living in Shanghai must follow the new waste sorting rules to sort

waste. If they don’t, they will be fined up to 200 Yuan. How much do you know about waste

sorting (垃圾分类)? Let’s learn about it together!

If you take a look at the rubbish bins outside of your house, you will find them in different

colors. But it’s not just for fun — those colors can tell you how you should sort your waste.

Not all rubbish is the same. There is kitchen waste, like banana peels (香蕉皮) and the food

we leave. There’s harmful waste, such as batteries (电池).

There’s recyclable waste, like bottles and then there’s other waste.

It’s important to know how to sort different kinds of waste into

different rubbish bins.

Waste sorting can help us in many ways. It can help us protect our ground and water. What’s

more, we can reuse (重复使用) some waste, such as paper, glass and old clothes, to make new

things.
