Crested ibises (朱鹮) are one of the oldest birds in the world. They live in Asia. People call
them the “Oriental gem” ( 东 方宝 宝 ). There beautiful birds almost disappeared ( 消失 ). But in
1981, Chinese scientists found seven of them in the wild and saved them from disappearing. This
year, May 23 was the 40th anniversary ( 周年) of the comeback of the birds. Here is a story of
them.
There were once lots of crested ibises in Asia. But in 1960s, pollution ( 污 染 ) and other
human activities made life hard for them. They began to disappear. Chinese scientists were
worried about this. They looked for birds in the wild. It took them about three years to look for the
birds in many places. At last, Liu Yinzeng and his team found seven crested ibises in Hanzhong on
May 23, 1981. They saw something like a crested ibis fly across the sky. They ran after it. Luckily,
they found it in a forest. Later, they found 6 more crested ibises.
After that, scientists started studying and protecting the birds. They asked people not to kill
the birds or cut down the trees. They also helped birds to get more babies. Over the past 40 years,
people saw the number of the crested ibis grow from 7 to over 5,000.

A little turtle says: “Please don’t touch（碰）me. I’m from
India. I have something on my back. They look like stars. When I
meet my enemies（敌人）in the wild, they can help me. People
like my stars, so they take me home as a pet. They like to touch my back. But I don’t like it.
Sometimes, the touch can even kill me. Please help me! I want to go home!”
