"Hey, lady! You can move your ugly car up now!" The silver-haired driver behind me
in a fancy truck rudely yelled at me. Without much thought, I yelled back at the man,
"What? Are you in a rush or something?"
I was waiting in line at the drive-through to order our breakfast on a Sunday morning.
There were only 12 inches or so between me and the car in front of me. There were also
three additional cars in front of that one. We were getting nowhere fast. What was he
hoping to gain by yelling at me?
I wanted to let my own anger go after this ridiculous exchange. But the more I
thought about it, the angrier I got. I was angry that he yelled at a mother in front of two
kids. My daughter and my son were both confused and saddened by what they had just
witnessed. We were on our way to a soccer tournament, and we had a bonus day free from
school and work. Probably, there was nothing in the world to be upset about. Then this
man let his anger out.
I told my kids I was so mad that I had to roll my window up so that I wouldn't keep
yelling at this guy. Then, I stopped and looked back. I had moved up the 12 or so inches at
his "suggestion", while he hadn't moved an inch. Suddenly, I felt sympathy for him. He
must have been suffering in some way. As my kids and I slowly made our way to the pick-
up window to pay for our order, I had an idea.
"I heard how rude that man was to you, and I wanted to apologize to you for having to
put up with that. He isn't worth paying for," the cashier said to me. "My kids support me in
doing that," I answered the cashier, adding that hate cannot drive out hate.
24. Why was the driver angry with the author?
A. Her car cut in. B. She held up his truck.
C. Her car stopped suddenly. D. She screamed at him.
25. What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 3?
A. Why her anger kept growing. B. What her kids' reaction was.
C. How she calmed herself down. D. Why she ordered the breakfast.
26. What was the author's final decision?
A. She taught her kids a lesson. B. She apologized to the driver.
C. She paid for the driver's food. D. She gave the cashier some advice.
27. What does the author intend to convey in the text?
A. Respond to hate with kindness.
B. Deal with a man as he deals with you.
C. Put distance between your car and another.
D. Never go to the drive-through at rush hours.

Our future selves used to be a riddle. Now, thanks to social media filters ( 滤镜), we
can stare them right in the face. People fell in love with TikTok this month to share
themselves "aging" in real time using a filter "Time Travel". Set to a sad song, the effect
shows the user's face slowly getting older, complete with wrinkles and sunspots.
Camera filters that age you have been around for years. But advancements in AI are
making the results more real. Doctor Aleksandra Brown said the TikTok "Time Travel"
filter does well in guessing how a given face would age.
As we get older, our facial skin thins, fat dissolves (溶解) and gravity pulls everything
downward. Not everyone is pleased about this. One of Brown's friends didn't like watching
time fly past. She couldn't stand watching herself age 50 years in 15 seconds—could life
really go by that fast? Brown cried herself after using the aging effect on her own young
daughter. She won't live to see her daughter get that old, she pointed out.
For other people, the "Time Travel" filter brought up unexpected positive feelings.
Actor Jonathan Bennett shared a video saying his own filtered face recalled happy
memories of his late father. Nicole Loehle, a 24-year-old in New Jersey, tested the effect
with her boyfriend. It gave her a new viewpoint, she said, she could imagine the
relationship lasting into their old age.
There's no correct way to age. But it's important to remember that no one can stop
time or undo its effects. "I keep trying to view aging as a gift," Brown said. "Some people
don't get to age, unluckily."
28. What can people do with the "Time Travel" filter?
A. Recover from a sad mood. B. Remove their wrinkles and sunspots.
C. Recall their happy childhood. D. Foresee their aging appearance.
29. What are Paragraph 3 and 4 mainly about?
A. Reminder of the flight of time. B. Instructions on using the aging filter.
C. Working principle of the aging filter. D. Reactions to the aging effect of the filter.
30. What is Brown's attitude towards aging?
A. Negative. B. Optimistic. C. Indifferent. D. Prejudiced.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. "Time Travel": Slowly or Quickly B. "Time Travel": to Develop or to Drop
C. "Time Travel": to Enjoy or to Suffer D. "Time Travel": Backward or Forward
D
In Oceanside, a coastal suburb about 40 miles north of San Diego, the palm trees
wave and the temperature is almost perfect. Teenagers watch surfers ride glassy waves.
Every day it feels like the most perfect summer day. There is just one problem: The sand is
disappearing.
While many visitors, and even lifelong Californians in the industrial state, might see
wide areas of sand as part of the state's natural beauty, the reality is that over decades, the
coast has become a highly engineered wonder. Millions of cubic yards of sand dug from
other parts has been added in the last century to build the postcard-worthy beach like the
one in Santa Monica.
But a range of forces have shrunk beaches all along California's coastline. California
could lose as much as 75% of its beaches by 2100, given the sea level rise related to
climate change. Over time, beach sand gets swept up into the water. Some of it moves
towards other beaches. Besides, dams and concrete canals have reduced the amount of
river sediment (沉淀物) flowing downstream that could help fill beaches as a supplement
(补充). If the shoreline were allowed to evolve without human intervention, the beaches
could continue to exist as we know them. But in California, the development in many
places along the coast has created a hard barrier, disturbing that natural evolution.
Over the years, local governments worked together on a few major sand supplement
projects. But those, still, have proved to be fleeting solutions. "Everything we do is a
short-term fix," said Gary Griggers, a professor specializing in coastal science. In recent
years, as the sand's disappearance grew more extreme, longtime Oceanside residents
