they were caught in a heavy storm. The young lady was a little afraid and asked her father. “What

should I do, stop or keep driving?”

Her father said, “Keep driving.”

After driving a few kilometers, the storm was becoming heavier and heavier. The young lady

noticed that some cars and big transport trucks were pulling over（靠边停）on the side of the

road. The young lady asked her father again if they should stop. But her father said nothing. So,

she had to keep on driving.

Ten minutes later, the storm started to become small and she could see a little more clearly.

After a couple of kilometers, she drove out of the storm. Moreover. the sun came out and the road

Her father told her to stop and get out of the car.

Her father said, “When you get out, you can look back at all the people in cars and big trucks

that gave up and they are still in the storm. Now, your storm is over because you didn’t give up.”

Don’t give up, even if the stronger do. If you keep going, soon your “personal storms” will be

over. The sun will shine on you again and the road ahead will be dry and clear.

Thanks to the hybrid rice（杂交水稻）that was discovered by Yuan Longping, the hunger

problem of thousands of Chinese people was mostly fixed in the 1980s.

On Sept 8th, Yuan, together with two other scientists, won China’s 2018 Future Scientist

Prize, for his continuous research on rice. Even on his 88th birthday, he still took part in the

International Development Forum of Rice Production in Hunan province. Although he was

suffering from an illness at the time, he was happy to talk to reporters about his latest work on sea

water rice.

Yuan has been researching on rice since he was at college. In 1964, he discovered a natural

hybrid rice plant in Hainan. Since then, he has focused on developing high production, hybrid rice

varieties（多样性）. In 1973, he became the first to successfully develop a sort of new hybrid

rice in the world. So, it's no wonder that he’s known as “Father of Hybrid Rice”. With the hard

work of Yuan’s group for about ten years, the production of the rice was increased.（From 150kg

per mu（亩）to 500kg per mu and more.）These varieties now take up about two thirds of

China’s rice crop, according to China News. And because of China’s Belt and Road, Yuan’s hybrid

rice is helping to solve food problems around the world. Actually, hybrid rice plants in Kenya

produce four to five times more rice than the country’s usual rice plants.

With a rising fame all over the world, Yuan gave a speech in English at the 9th Shandong

High-level Talents Forum in Qingdao last year. His 20-minute speech in English made him an

Internet hit. This is not Professor Yuan’s first time to show his excellent English skills. At the 1979

International Rice Research Conference, he fluently answered questions about his hybrid rice

research in English and was highly praised by participants for having excellent English. According

to an article in 1999 by CNN, the scientist speaks both English and Russian fluently. “I never need

a translator when I go abroad,” he told the US news network. You could hardly believe, at first

English was a hot potato to him, but he overcame the difficulty by working hard.

However, Yuan understands that even the wisest people should still be open to learn new

things. “The farmers of the country have rich experience in planting rice, and we should learn

from them.”

To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, governments at every level in China have

been using many different control measures.

In heavily-affected areas, the government has chosen to lock down cities. In Hubei province,

for example, after Wuhan’s lockdown on Jan 23, thirteen other cities in the province also taken

lockdown measures. The decision proved effective (有效的) in stopping the virus’ spread at its

root, China Daily said.

In some villages, people put up red banners (条幅) or used loudspeakers to educate people

about the virus. Many communities also set up checkpoints to check people’s temperatures, keep

records of their travel history, keep non-residents (非住户) out of the community, and make sure

that people quarantine (隔离) themselves after returning from high-risk areas. Some community

workers also help those who stay at home by bringing in food or medicine, taking out the rubbish,

and offering psychological (心理的) advice. The community workers have built the first line of

defense (防御) against the virus across China.

According to Xinhua, there are millions of community workers in 650,000 urban and rural

(城市和农村) communities across the country. Many people from all walks of life have

volunteered to do this job.

“In the face of an unexpected outbreak, it’s amazing to see that China could organize people

on such a large scale (规模),” Li Baoping from the Ningxia Academy of Social Sciences told

Xinhua. “Great governance capacity (治理能力) at all levels gives us confidence in winning the

battle.”
