（2020·上海·上外附中七年级期中）Jessica, a thirteen-year-old American girl wants to be a fashion

designer when she graduates from school. She thinks her designs will be more exciting than clothes bought from

store. But until this month, Jessica has never touched a sewing（缝纫）machine. After her first class, Jessica and

sewing machines in the United States last year. This is about twice as many as in 1999. Sewing machines have

been around for more than 150 years. But they have changed a lot since your grandmother was a girl. Camilla

started sewing lessons after getting a sewing machine for her 11th birthday. She has sewn a lot by hand, but she

wants to make more difficult things. Elizabeth, 9, needed time to get used to her machine, but soon she could use

it well. By the end of class, Elizabeth was happy and wearing her new hat.

（2021·上海奉贤·七年级期中）Farmer John and his wife lived on a farm. They raised a pig, a cow and a

chicken. One day, a mouse saw that John had set a mousetrap（捕鼠器）. He went around the farm and warned

all of the other animals about the trap. “There is a mousetrap in the house!” the mouse said to the chicken first.

“That’s bad news for you, but it doesn’t bother（打扰）me,” the chicken said. Then, the mouse went to the

pig and the cow. But the pig and the cow did not care either. They said they didn’t have to worry about it and

wished the mouse good luck.

One night, a snake got caught in the mousetrap. John’s wife thought the snake was dead and tried to remove

it. But the snake was still alive and bit her hand. She became very sick and had a bad fever. The farmer decided to

make some chicken soup to treat（治疗）her sickness, so he killed the chicken.

As John’s wife continued to become sicker, many of her friends came to visit her. The farmer killed the pig

and used it to make food for the visitors. Sadly, John’s wife died from her illness. The farmer killed the cow as a

sacrifice（祭品）for her funeral. The mouse watched all of this with great sorrow. He felt sorry for them.

When we learn that someone is facing difficulties or danger, all of us can be at risk. It is better to help and

encourage one another instead of leaving others alone with their problems.
