Fat Bear Week has been an annual event for the past five years in Katmai National Park in Alaska. Here is the
shortened list of this year’s possible champion.
Chunk
Chunk was first identified in 2007 as an independent 2.5-year-old bear. He has been the fattest bear for several
years. Due to his size and strength, Chunk had gained the confidence and ability to drive away most other bears to
get some of the best feeding spots.
Yet, in the past few years his behavior changed. He would sometimes play with other bears or wait patiently
for their leftovers. He was also unwilling to challenge the other big males at Brooks River. In summer 2023,
however, he got one of the best fishing spots and became the largest adult male again.
Grazer
Grazer was introduced to Brooks River in 2005. She is one of the best fishers and a protective mother bear at
the river. She often attacks much larger bears — even large adult males — in order to protect her children.
Instead of making frequent trips to Brooks Falls, she often uses the river mouth area where fewer bears are
present most likely to provide her family with more safety.
Walker
Walker, a large adult male, was first identified as an independent 2.5-year-old in 2009. He often had easy
access to some of the best fishing spots due to his size and good nature.
Walker remained a cooperative and playful bear until his young adult years. Having been frequently
challenged by other bears such as Grazer and another male bear Otis, he shows much less tolerance (宽容) for other
bears compared to his younger self.
