Text1.
M: It is a pity you missed the art exhibition.
W: Really?
M: Yeah. Many visitors wouldn’t tear themselves away from the paintings. It is indeed a great
feast of eyes. I want to visit it again.
Text2.
M: Can you change the room for me? It’s too noisy.
W: Sorry, we don’t have any spare room today. Could you wait till tomorrow? The American
People-to-People Education Delegation will be leaving tomorrow morning.
Text3.
W: Andy, I bought a shirt for you.
M: Thank you. I hope you kept the receipt. I’ve put on some weight.
Text4.
M: What are you doing?
W: I am making some lunch. We are very busy now. We have to study for exams, so I am making
something very quick. It’s just some meat with salad and potatoes if you look at it.
Text5.
W: Hi, Tom! How are youWe missed you at the party last night. Are you OK
M: I don’t know. I didn’t really feel like going out, so I just did some cooking at home. I guess I’m
feeling a little homesick.
W: Come on. We’ve been through this already! Look, I know it’s hard to get used to the
environment when you first got here, but we agreed that you were going to try and deal with it.
M: I was. It’s just that the vacation is coming up but I won’t be able to go home because I can’t
afford the airfare. Maybe I can take advantage of this opportunity to do some volunteering.
Text6.
M: How was the activity holiday?
W: It really wore me out. There were many activities: climbing, walking, sailing and so on. Every
day was something different, and then on the last day they gave out prizes to the best people at
each activity.
M: Did you get one?
W: Yeah. I was surprised to get one. Climbing was awful — I couldn’t reach the top of the wall.
My team was the best at the walking, though. We were left in a place and had to find our way
back. We were first because luckily I could read the map.
M: That’s great! What about the sailing? Did you have a good time going sailing?
W: Yeah. I really enjoyed the sailing, even though I wasn’t very good at it.
Text7.
W: Hello, Will.
M: Hi Sally. Can I ask your advice about something?
W: Sure. What is it?
M: My parents won’t let me stay out after nine o’clock in the evening.
W: Why won’t they let you stay out?
M: Well, one day last week I got home very late because I missed the last bus. It was midnight,
and they were very angry because I didn’t ring them or answer the mobile.
W: Did you apologize?
M: They didn’t give me a chance. We just got into a big argument.
W: If I were you, I’d say sorry for being late last week, and tell them I’ll make sure I’m always
back before 9: 00.
Text8.
W: Mike, what lessons did you have at school this morning?
M: We had art, but we didn’t go to the classroom. Ms. Green took us to visit the museum in town.
W: How come? What did you do there?
M: We looked at paintings by famous artists.
W: I wish I had been with you. Did anything attract you?
M: A lot. But my favorite painting was by Picasso. It looked very strange.
W: Did Ms. Green explain something about the paintings?
M: Yes, and after that we made pictures for a competition. I drew a picture of Ms. Green. It looked
like a Picasso painting.
W: Did she like it?
M: Ms. Green wasn’t very pleased, and she thought it dull. So, I didn’t win.
Text9.
M: So, are you traveling in Sydney, too?
W: No. I’m here to attend a three-week course.
M: What are you studying, then?
W: It’s more like a training course. I’m a school teacher, and the course is about a special teaching
method. It’s for helping children who have difficulty in reading.
MWhat does that mean?
W: Well, it’s not that they don’t know how to read, but rather, they can’t understand what they
read.
M: Okay. I thought it was for kids who can’t see clearly. Anyway, it sounds very meaningful.
W: Thanks.
M: Is Sydney the only place where you can take this course?
W: No, but it’s much cheaper here. It also lasts longer, which means it provides more information.
Text10.
When I was young, my uncle would tell me about all of his experiences traveling around Europe
by bicycle. Despite he completed several trips around the U.K., he never had the chance to
accomplish his main goal of biking across Asia to China. Now, he has several injuries and a busy
work schedule. He cannot ride with me, but he's inspired me to complete this dream. Furthermore,
he has all of the knowledge of routes to help me ride across Asia. Once the summer starts, I’ll
leave my house in France, my job as a restaurant server, and my friends and family to start my
trip. It’ll be sad to say goodbye to my parents and to quit my work, but this once-in-a-lifetime trip
will make it all worth it. Riding through Europe during the summer will be comfortable and easy,
so having company won’t be necessary. But I do worry about being in Central Asia during the
winter, so I plan to have my cousin join me for a few months. There will be too much snow to bike
anywhere, so we've arranged to get jobs there. Luckily, there are many popular ski fields, so
