A famous teacher was speaking to the students at our school. He began his lesson by holding up a 100 bill.
Then he said to the three hundred students, “Who would like to have this 100 bill?” The students began to put
up their hands at once.
Then he said, “I am going to give this bill to one of you, but first, let me do this.” He then made this bill into a
ball. Then he said, “Who wants it?” Hands went into the air.
“Well,” he said, “What if I do this?” and he dropped it on the floor and stepped() on it. He picked up the dirty,
crumpled(弄皱) bill and said, “Who still wants it?” Hands went back into the air.
“My friends,” he said, “You’ve learned a valued lesson today. No matter what I did to the money, you still
wanted it because it didn’t go down in value. It was still worth 100.
Many times in our lives, we’re dropped; crumpled, and stepped on by the chances we take and the things that
happen to us. We feel as if we are worth nothing. But remember, no matter what has happened to you, you will

The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep. A few dogs started barking() at it. The elephant
woke up in a terrible anger: it chased(追逐) the dogs into the village where they ran for safety.
That didn't stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were
scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.
Parbati Barua's father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer( ). He taught Parbati to ride an
elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round-up -- how to
catch wild elephants.
Parbati hasn't always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to
boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her
old life. "Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the
chase," she says.
But Parbati doesn't catch elephants just for fun. "My work," she says, "is to rescue man from the elephants,
and to keep the elephants safe from man. " And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years.
Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the
jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea
garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill.
The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend hours a
day singing love songs to a newly captured( ) elephant. "Eventually they grow to love their tamers and
never forget them. They are also more loyal( 忠实的) than humans," she said, as she climbed up one of her
elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!
29.For Parbati, catching elephants is mainly to_______ .
A. get long lasting excitement
B. keep both man and elephants safe
C. send them back to the jungle
D. make the angry elephants tame
30.Before Parbati studied in a boarding school,________ .
A. she spent her time hunting with her father
B. she learned how to sing love songs
C. she had already been called an elephant princess
D. she was taught how to hunt tigers
31.Indian elephants are getting increasingly angry and they revenge(报复)because __________.
A. they are caught and sent for heavy work
B. illegal hunters capture them and kill them
C. they are attacked and their land gets limited
D. dogs often bark at them and chase them
32. The passage starts with an elephant story in order to explain that in India _________.
A. people easily fall victim(受害者) to elephants' attacks
B. the man-elephant relationship is getting worse
C. elephant tamers are in short supply
D. dogs are as powerful as elephants

Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn't to just force( ) an
idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes,
you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.
Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association ( 联 系 )between
daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants( 参与者) first do an
“unusual-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could.
Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the unusual-use task”
again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and
move right on to the task exercise again.
Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants
reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this
daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.
But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as
“unconscious(无意识的) thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the
back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的)way.
When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of
control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.
Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to
do what you want and let your mind wander.
33. The “unusual-use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants________.
A. complete an easy task
B. complete a very difficult task
C. take a 12-minute break
D. think of various ways to use an object
34. Why did the participants who completed the easy task perform best?
A. They were not actively working to solve the easy task.
