The Limitations of Digital Technology in the Fight against the Virus
Digital technology can help and has helped us in the fight against the novel coronavirus. But as coverage and
understandable public interest-and concern- about the outbreak has intensified, it seems wise first to look at how
the event is (41) ______ some of technology’s limitations both in and of itself and how we interpret what it can do
for us.
Three themes emerge.
Technology is not immediate. There is a(n)(42)_______ to believe that the recent rapid advances in
processing power, algorithmic( 运 算法 则) development, machine learning and artificial intelligence can now
(43)______ almost instant answers to everything. The digital landscape has changed massively since the SARS
outbreak in 2003. But while we may be able do things more (44)_______, some things still take time and that is
particularly true of a virus. There is no ‘one size fits all’ here and, indeed, there are real dangers in believing that
one analytical strategy and its particular use can be applied universally.
Second, as viruses spread and (45)_______ so do the data sets around them. We are not dealing with a
situation of simple ‘garbage in, garbage out’ but rather one where new information is emerging daily and there is
the further (46)______ that there were delays in early reporting of the outbreak. That means he results even the
wisest medical experts can produce are also going to change. Also, as you might( 47)_______, their
methodologies(方法论) vary.
Third, a lot of data is being placed into the digital area, across social media, specialist sites and elsewhere.
Here, the (48)________with 17 years ago is especially great. But the (48)________behind various postings are
many. Anyone might be able to access the data via a web browser- and its free availability is laudable( 值得称赞
)- but its intended audiences can be very different. In some cases, experts are looking to inform the public but in
others they are looking to contribute to and (50)_______ the debate taking place among themselves. These goals
are laudable and necessarybut they do not always coexist harmoniously.

III. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B,C and D. Fill in
each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
On March 16th I left the offices of The Economist to head home. That was the last day when all editorial staff
assembled in our London office. And, at the time of writing, no date for a return to the office is in (41)______.
It is remarkable how quickly we have adapted. The newspaper has been written, edited and produced from
couches and kitchen tables. January and February seem like an ancient era-the BC (before coronavirus) to the new
AD (after (42)______).
The shift may (43)______ great workplace transformations in the 19th and 20th centuries, and it has been a much
more sudden transition than occurred with factories, enabled by advanced economies that revolve around services
instead of manufacturing. Back in the 1970s, when Britain adopted a three-day week (to combat a miners' strike),
there were power cuts and TV stations had to close down early. This pandemic has not turned the lights
(44)______.
Not only that, it has made remote work seem both normal and acceptable. In the past employees who stayed
home had to overcome the (45)______. that they were bunking of (偷懒). Now those who insist on being at the
office sound self-important.
Things are (46)______, of course. Video calls lack the spontaneity of a normal meeting; no off-the-cuff (即兴的)
remarks to lighten the mood. Distance makes it difficult to generate camaraderie. Creativity is probably harder to
foster. Experts say new ideas come from weak links in networks-i.e., people you meet occasionally. Such
(47)______ collisions’ have become rarer.
Yet (48)______ offices will not disappear, it is hard to imagine that working life will return to BC ways. For
more than a century workers have stuffed themselves onto crowded trains and buses to get into the office. For the
past two months they have not had to commute. (49)______, for their part, have maintained expensive offices in
city centers because they needed to gather staff in one place. The rent is only part of the cost; there are the cleaning,
lighting, printers, catering and security (50)______.
Another aspect of the AD era may be the disappearance of the five-day working week. Even before the pandemic
many workers became used to taking phone calls or answering emails at the weekend. In the AD era the
(51)______ between home and working life, a useful way of
relieving stress, will be even harder to sustain.
