Mary Edwards Walker was the fifth daughter of the family. Her parents, who used to
encourage her to think freely and allowed her to wear men’s trousers, started the first free
school in Oswego, New York so their daughters would be just as educated as their son.
Outside of school, all of the children helped work on the farm. After finishing at her parent’s
school, Walker attended the Falley Seminary in Fulton, New York. When she graduated, she
became a teacher, but she knew she wanted to be a doctor. Later she attended Syracuse
Medical College and received her medical degree in 1855 as the second woman to graduate
from the college.
When the Civil War began in 1861, Walker wanted to join the Union’s efforts. She went
to Washington but was not allowed to serve as a medical officer because she was a woman. At
the time, the army had no female surgeons, so Walker was only allowed to practice as a nurse.
However, in 1863 her request to practice as a surgeon was finally accepted. She became the
first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War.
During her work as a surgeon in the war, Walker often crossed the battle lines to care for
soldiers and civilians. In April of 1864, she was thought to be a spy and held as a prisoner of
war for four months. A month after she was released, she became the assistant surgeon of the
52nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, Walker was awarded the Medal of
Honor by President Andrew Johnson.
In addition to her work with the army, Walker began to advocate for women’s rights. She
famously wore men’s trousers and advocated for “dress reform”. She also fought for suffrage
(选举权) and tried to register to vote in 1987, but she was denied. In 1916, the Medal of
Honor was taken away from Walker, who died of illness at 86. Decades later, President Jimmy
Carter legally restored the Medal of Honor to Walker’s name. In 2012 Walker’s hometown set
up a 900-pound bronze statue in honor of her contributions.
4. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us about Walker?
A. Her dress style. B. Her farm experience.

5. What made Walker fail to be a surgeon when the Civil War began?
A. Moral intolerance. B. Racial intolerance.
C. Gender discrimination. D. Political discrimination.
6. What happened to Walker in April of 1864?

1970s dishes are set to make a comeback as lockdown restrictions ease. Recipe searches
for prawn cocktail (大虾冷盘) have risen by more than a third this month, according to new
figures at Waitrose. Other classic recipes in demand include beef Wellington and coronation
chicken. People cooking these dishes at home have also taken to social media to show off their
skills, with 45,000 posting pictures of them.
Zoe Simons, Senior Innovation Chef at Waitrose told FEMAIL: “Now we’re able to host
indoors once again. We have seen a growing trend in retro (怀旧的) dinner party recipe
searches at Waitrose. It’s clear we’re revisiting our childhoods and recreating recipes such as
prawn cocktail and baked Alaska, dishes which our parents and grandparents would have
served for an extra special evening.”
Traditionally a simple dessert, jelly (果冻) has been given a grown-up update using
experimental flavours, shapes and colours that “pop” on Instagram. London’s Michelin-starred
Hide, which offers a food featuring a strawberry jelly on its summer menu, is leading the
charge of restaurants bringing back jelly. Sales of Waitrose’s jelly child desserts are up 21
percent year-on-year.
Department store John Lewis has also seen a rise in sales of tablecloths up by 73 percent
compared to last year as people prepare to host again. It comes following a year of increased
demand for retro goods as people seek home comforts following a difficult 12 months.
“School dinner cake” has taken over UK social media. It’s become so popular that it’s
appearing on menus at restaurants and bakeries across the country offering home delivery —
as thousands become nostalgic for the dessert which is being branded the lightest, fluffiest (最
松软的) cake ever.
Expert Charlotte Fox Weber previously told Mailonline: “In a period of stressful change,
nostalgia transports us back to what we know — and there’s such sweet familiarity in things
from the past. There’s something so comforting about past associations and memories. It
makes complete emotional sense that in an era of mess, sorrow and stress, we feel safe when
we are reminded of childhood pleasures.”
8. What can be inferred about beef Wellington and coronation chicken?
A. They’re convenient to cook. B. They’re newly created dishes.
C. They’re unpopular during lockdown. D. They’re recent social media hits.
9. What is London’s Michelin-starred Hide doing?
A. Offering some simple dishes.
B. Modernising its summer menu.
C. Presenting jelly in a creative way.
D. Trying to attract grown-up customers.
10. How are people in the UK feeling these days?
A. More concerned about their health.
B. More worried about their future life.
C. More willing to have less home delivery.
D. More eager to invite people to dinner at home.
11. What is Weber trying to explain?
A. Why retro dishes are getting popular.
B. Why we are feeling sorrowful and stressed.
C. How lockdown is impacting on us emotionally.
D. How we can keep our childhood pleasures alive.

China is one of the countries most affected by typhoons in the world. While summer is
the peak typhoon season, autumn typhoons might be more dangerous.
In September, Typhoon Conson and Chanthu formed successively in the northwest
Pacific Ocean. Chanthu has become a super typhoon, bringing “gale-force winds and
rainstorms to regions including Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu,” reported Xinhua on Sept
14.
It’s no surprise that super typhoons occur in September. From the vernal equinox (春分),
the subsolar point (太阳直射点) moves from the equator to the Tropic of Cancer (北回归线),
heating the tropical ocean in the northern hemisphere (半球). The sea temperature reaches the
highest from August to September, according to Weather China website.
“The warming ocean, especially the warming northern South China Sea, enhances
typhoons before landfall (着陆),” said Xiao Zhixiang, a researcher of the Guangxi Institute of
Meteorological Sciences, in the conference of the Japan Geoscience Union in 2020.
Autumn brings cold air, and when that cold air meets a typhoon, it could make it more
destructive. “This will develop into a powerful typhoon due to the greater temperature
difference between the cold continent and the hot sea,” said Woo-Sik Jung, a researcher at Inje
University in South Korea, at the conference. “In other words, the larger the temperature
difference, the stronger the wind, the more powerful the autumn typhoon can be compared to
the summer typhoon.”
