These days, there are virtual classrooms, virtual museums… Now come virtual summer

camps. For those kids who don’t want to leave home, they can still enjoy summer camp

activities that range from do-it-yourself mini construction projects and exploring technology

skills to reading challenges and crafts ( 工艺). Enter Walmart and Amazon… These companies,

not usually in the business of promoting summer camps, are offering their own versions of

virtual summer camps.

Subtle star shines bright

Every once in a while, a movie star comes along who has a personality that shines as

brightly off screen as it does in their films. And for nearly 40 years, American actress and

producer Frances McDormand has been one such movie star.

Since 1984, she has starred in more than 50 films and television shows. McDormand won

her first two Oscars for her roles in the film Fargo （《冰血暴》）in 1997 and Three Billboards

Outside Ebbing, Missouri （《三块广告牌》）in 2018. Most recently, she won her third Best

Actress award at the 93rd Academy Awards for her role in Nomadland ( 《无依之地》). In the

film, McDormand plays Fern, a poor migrant worker who lives out of her van ( 厢式货车 )

while traveling the United States looking for odd jobs.

Through Camp Handmade, customers are provided with arts and crafts workshops and a

group discussion. What’s more, Handmade has a wide selection of offerings from crafting

experts, which are available to all campers.

Walmart

Drew Barrymore, Neil Patrick Harris, LeBron James, Mina Menzel and Todd Oldham

are stepping outside of their day job to serve as camp counselors ( 顾问). The celebrities will

lead sessions on arts and crafts, fitness and other activities.

Barnes & Noble

Although McDormand won the hearts of many early on in her career, there was a time

when she didn’t enjoy being a celebrity, and even stopped speaking to the media for a number

of years. During an interview with Yahoo News in 2015, she explained, “I was starting to not

like the job of acting because it also involved not just the promotion of what I’d done, but

myself.”

The bookstore launched the Summer Reading Program for kids between first and sixth

grades. Kids can earn one free book at Barnes & Noble if they read any eight books this

summer and record them in this Summer Reading Journal.

However, as she was convinced that her place in the spotlight gave her the ability to

reach millions of people, McDormand decided to use that power for something positive. In the

years since, she has continued to portray complex female characters that challenge ideas of

what a woman is supposed to be. Also, at 63 years old, she often discusses how important it is

for society to change its views about aging, especially with regard to women.
