Are you passionate about wildlife, earth science or the environment? If so, why not join a
citizen science tour? These study trips allow you to participate in scientific research through
observation and data collection.
Earthwatch
The environmental charity Earthwatch has been sending volunteers on research trips for
nearly fifty years. The firm’s latest tour takes citizen scientists to Peru on a weeklong journey
to photograph, measure and collect genetic samples of fish to help stop overfishing.
Lindblad Expeditions-national Geographic
Lindblad Expeditions-national Geographic was successful in launching last year’s pilot
program, Citizen Science Bioblitz. Trips starting this year will follow whales in Alaska, sharks
in the South Pacific and study microplastics in the Antarctic.

mining. “Our guests get real excitement from jumping on the back of a motorbike to save
local wildlife,” said Sangjay Choegyal, the general manager. NOTE: A minimum three-night
stay is required and participants must be at least 13 years old.
Biosphere Expeditions
The international nonprofit Biosphere Expeditions has a series of new trips including

Arlene was my neighbor. I offered to walk her dog, Velma, this morning because she was
ill. I was happy to volunteer. However, I was less pleased when Arlene made me spend 20
minutes dressing Velma in its raincoat and four tiny rain boots. I would never have put clothes
on any animal I owned. That’s what fur is for, I thought.
After I had done my good deed, I could finally go off to work before I was late.
“Thank you so much. So I’ll see you again at noon,” Arlene said.
“Wait, what?” I said, with my eyes wide open.
“That’s when Velma gets her next walk,” Arlene said, as if I’d somehow agreed to a
whole daily schedule. That day was just the beginning. All the next week, Arlene reminded me
to walk Velma at various times throughout the day.
“She talks as if I should feel lucky to walk her dog!” I complained to my friend Callie on
the phone.
“You just have to tell her no, Linda,” Callie said.
“I’ve tried!” I cried. “But every time I do, I get tongue-tied. Can’t she see I’m tired?”
“That’s why you have to tell her.”
The next day, I called Callie again. “I gave Arlene a list of local dog walkers, but she
hasn’t called any of them,” I said. “I’m getting pretty tired of hearing you complain about her,
to be honest,” Callie said. How could Callie be so rude? No, I told myself, she wasn’t really
rude, and she was just honest. Callie was still my friend. Maybe I ought to try following her
example.

I marched over to Arlene’s. “Much as I love Velma. I don’t want to walk her three or four
times a day. It’s too much for me,” I said, waiting for Arlene’s response. “I really appreciate
all you did for her,” Arlene said. “And for me. Thank you, Linda.” By the time Arlene
recovered, she and I were just as friendly as ever. I just needed to learn when to say yes and
when to say no.
4. What was the author’s opinion on putting clothes on animals?
A. It was common. B. It was interesting.
C. It was unbearable. D. It was unnecessary.
5. How did the author feel when Arlene asked her to come at noon?
A. Relaxed. B. Alarmed.
C. Surprised. D. Disappointed.
6. Why did the author call Callie?
A. The author found Arlene’s health worsening.
B. Callie knew many local dog walkers.
C. Callie was experienced in walking dogs.
D. The author found walking Velma had become a trouble.
7. What lesson did the author learn from Callie?
A. Never be afraid to be honest.
B. It is not easy to be a good man.
C. Always be ready to help a neighbor.
D. Being rude means destroying friendships.
C
Hearing aids usually bring to mind images of ugly, ineffective equipment mainly worn by
the elderly. But this ill repute is quickly changing, as they’ve recently taken a turn thanks to
two creators, Dr. Marco Vietor and Paul Crusius, who now lead the fastest-growing hearing
aid company in the world — hear. com.
Hear. com’s years of research led to the development of two game-changing hearing aids
— the Silk and Styletto. These impressive devices contain advanced technology in designs
that are practically invisible. They also use a special way that has been clinically (临床地)
proven to deliver better-than-normal hearing so you can clearly understand speech in any
environment. With additional features like Bluetooth and rechargeability, today’s hearing aids
are attracting even younger customers skilled in tech.
But hear. com knows it’s not just about tech and design. They’ve put an enormous effort
into the whole experience to make hearing care more available and more affordable.
“Everyone should be able to hear well to live well,” Crusius says. “And it’s very individual.
Each person’s hearing loss is different and requires a personalized approach to find the best
solution.”
“We hear with our brains, not our ears. And it takes at least 30 days for our brain to adjust
(适应) and relearn how to hear again with new hearing aids,” Dr. Vietor says. “To make sure
your best outcome with hearing aids, we developed the industry’s first 30-day program,
Hearing Success Program, so customers have that extra level of care and knowledge to
succeed.”
And it’s working. Hear. com has now helped more than 100,000 customers improve their
hearing. Their A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and 5-star rating on the customer
review platform, Trustpilot, speak for itself.
8. What does the underlined part “this ill repute” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Hearing aids being too expensive to afford.
B. Hearing aids ignoring the needs of the elderly.
C. Hearing aids developing at a really slow pace.
D. Hearing aids being poor in design and function.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The popularity of hear. com’s hearing aids.
B. The improvement in hear. com’s hearing aids.
C. The images of hear. com’s hearing aids.
D. The effort hear. com has made to develop hearing aids.
10. What does the Hearing Success Program aim to do?

C. Find the possible causes for customers’ hearing loss.
D. Educate people about the results of hearing loss.
