Some of the wonderful snorkeling(浮潜)in the world can be found in the clear shallow waters of
the Bahamas. Anyone who has ever snorkeled here will confirm that the Bahamas is an excellent
option.
New Providence Island
It is the most popular tourist destination in the Bahamas. The waters that surrounded the island are
filled with exotic fish, colorful reefs, sea gardens, and underwater wrecks. Snorkelers and more
certified divers can explore the many shipwrecks( 沉 船 )that are scattered throughout the nation.
Interestingly, not all of the shipwrecks were caused by Mother Nature, some ships were purposely sunk
to create artificial reefs.
Grand Bahama Island
As another popular vacation spot, it is also an excellent place for snorkeling. The island’s waters
are rich in marine life and coral beds. Many snorkelers enjoy exploring the island’s Shark Junction, a
place where reef sharks, nurse sharks, eels, and stingrays are plentiful. Others heaf for Lucayan
Caverns. At more than six miles long, it is one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world and
part of Grand Bahama’s Lucayan National Park.
The Abaco Island
Composed of two main islands and numerous cays, they offer some of the best shallow water
snorkeling in Bahamas. Colorful coral reefs extend for miles and begin at a depth of just five feet. They
are teeming with a wide variety of fish as well as eels, stingrays, turtles, and dolphins. Abaco’s
Walker’s Cay is known for its “Shark Rodeo” where divers can view hundreds of non-aggressive
sharks.
Thunderball Grotto
Located in the Exuma Island chain, it is a beautiful cave that is popular with snorkelers. Its claim
to fame is that it was used as a location for filming several movies including two featuring James Bond.
Snorkelers can access the cave during low tide and are able to swim with grouper, snapper, angerlfish,
lobsters and the occasional sea turtle.

Many people around the world like to study in America’s center of higher education, New York.
But if you don’t know where to start, it helps to belong to a community. The city has a place where
students have a chance to meet, and find their place in the world. It’s a private, non-profit center called
International House. It serves students from more than 100 countries.
Adjibola Amzat from Nigeria lives there. He left his job as a news reporter to study at Columbia
University, studying for a graduate degree program in journalism. Amzat thinks International House
has helped to improve his experience at Columbia University. “There are many people around the
campus, and there is a diversity of cultures in the city, but we don’t have a chance to know each other.
New York would have been a very lonely place for me without the International House.”
Heather Mangum is the director of communications for International House. She has urged
students to socialize with other students in the many shared spaces of the building. “People stay in
rooms that are by design very small so that they come out into the common areas, and interact and
exchange with each other. The dining room is communal by design, so you can sit with someone new
for every meal.”
International House welcomes graduate students from many universities in New York. They have
a chance to attend many cultural celebrations throughout the year. Many students say their interaction
with other students has led to new friendships and personal growth.
Akmyrat Tuyliyev from Turkmenistan says his experiences at International House made him want
to work to change the world.“I come from a country where we don’t have different races. I had never
seen so many people from so many cultures until I came here. Seeing students from Russia, China, and
all those countries coming here to unite is really inspiring.”
Many of the 700 people living there say they want to continue the relationships they have begun
when they return home. And they want to share with their countrymen the leadership skills they have
learned in the International House.
4.What is the most important function of the International House?
A.It offers students a free living place. B.It gives students a sense of belonging.
C.It provides a good learning atmosphere. D.It serves as a center of higher education.
5.What is Amzat’s attitude toward the International House?
A.Indifferent B.Tolerant C.Supportive D.Concerned
6.Why are the rooms in the International House very small?
A.To make students go out to talk with each other.
B.To cut down the cost of living there.
C.To hold more international students to stay.
D.To avoid too much unnecessary furniture.
7.What can be inferred from Tuyliyev’s words?
A.He wants to change the world. B.He is not satisfied with his homeland.
C.He plans to return home soon. D.He is impressed by the diverse cultures there.

The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologist( 人类学家). Descriptions
like “Paleolithic(旧石器时代)Man”,“Neolithic(新石器时代)Man”, etc.,neatly sum up whole periods.
When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twenty-first century, they will
surely choose the label “Legless Man”. Histories of the time will go something like this:“In the twenty-
first century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and
trains from a very early age. There were lifts in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. And
the surprising things is that they didn’t use their legs even when they went on holiday. They built cable
railways, ski-lifts and roads to the top of every huge mountain. All the beauty spots on earth were
ruined by the presence of large car parks”
The future history books might also record that we lost the right of using our eyes. In our hurry to
get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel givers you a bird’s-eye
view of the world or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you ravel by
car or train, the unclear picture of the countryside constantly slides over the window. When you
mention the most impressive place names in the world, the typical 21st century traveler always says
“I’ve been there.”--meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.”
When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing---you live mainly in the future because
you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when
it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you skip all
experience. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives in the present. For him traveling and arriving
are one and the same thing---he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the
present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a
delicious physical tiredness. Satisfying sleep will be his---the just reward of all true travelers.
8.Anthropologists name man nowadays “Legless Man” because ________
A.people prefer cars, buses and trains B.people travel without using legs
C.lifts prevent people from walking D.people use their legs less and less
9.According to the passage, what might make people lose the right of using their eyes?
A.The modern means of transportation B.A bird’s-eye view of the world
C.The unclear sight from the vehicles D.The fast-paced life style
10.From the passage, we know traveling at high speeds means ________
A.appreciating beautiful scenery B.experiencing life skills
C.focusing on the next destination D.feeling physical tiredness
11.What does the author intend to tell us?
A.Modern transportation devices have replaced legs.
B.Traveling makes the world a small place.
C.Human’s history develops very fast.
D.The best way to travel is on foot.

The freedom that most of us enjoyed as kids---the freedom to explore new places, to run around---
no longer exists. For various reasons, today’s parents are too worried to let children have the kinds of
experiences that most of us took for granted. Parents are afraid of strangers in the park, or of sacrificing
their child’s future by letting them ‘waste’ an afternoon playing in the backyard instead of taking piano
lessons.
The free-range parenting movement is a direct response to that fear. It tells parents that one of the
best things they can do for their child is to get out of the way every once in a while. Free-range
parenting argues that children grow happier, healthier and more adaptable, when they are given the
freedom to play, create, fight, compromise, fail and figure things out for themselves.
The seeds of the free-range parenting movement were planted in 2008, when journalist Lenore
