一、阅读理解(每小题 3分,共 30 分)
1.In so many wayscyberspace mirrors the real world. People ask for
informationplay gamesand share hobby tips. Others buy and sell
products. Still others look for friendshipor even love.
Some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They're
looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find
loveThat answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships
actually succeed. Others end in tears.
Unlike the real worldhoweveryour knowledge about a person is
limited to(限于)words on a computer screen. Identity(身份)and
appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rathera person's thoughts or
at least the thoughts they type are what really counts. So even the shyest
person can become a chat-room star.
Usuallythis “faceless” communication doesn't create problems.
Identity doesn't really matter when you're in a chat-room discussing politics
or hobbies. In factthis focus on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a
great place for exciting conversation. Where else can so many people come
together to chat
Supporters of online relationships say that the Internet allows couples
to get to know each other intellectually first. Personal appearance doesn't
get in the way.
But critics(批评者)of online relationships argue that no one can
truly know another person in cyberspace. WhyBecause the Internet gives
users a lot of control over how others view them. Internet users can
carefully choose their words to fit whatever image they want to give. And
they don't have to worry about what their “nonverbal(不用语言表达
的)” communication is doing for their image. In a sensethey're not
really themselves. All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in
cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love
relationship. With so many unknownsit's easy to let one's imagination"
fill in the blanks”. This surely leads to disappointment when couples meet
in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different
from the real person.
So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of
Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll, "Life in the real world is far richer than
anything you'll find on a computer screen."

A. Interested.
B. Not interested.

2.I travel a lot,and I find out different “styles” (风格)of directions
every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”
Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑的)in Japan because most
streets there don’t have names;in Japan,people use landmarks(地标)in their
directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to
travelers,“Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go
past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop. ”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually
many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many
places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks,
people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for
example, people will say, "Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go
another mile."
People in LosAngles, California, have no idea of distance on the map;
they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?”
you ask. “Oh,”they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here. ’’You
say,“Yes,but how many miles away is it?”They don’t know.
It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question
sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might
say,wSorry, I have no idea. But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I
don't know." People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know" is impolite.
They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very,
very lost in Yucatan!
1.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they
usually .
A.describe the place carefully
