Do you want to experience the charm of national parks in the fall? Here are 4 parks that offer ideal visiting
conditions.
Everglades National Park (Florida)
By the middle of October, temperatures have dropped to a much more comfortable level for hiking, biking,
and paddling in the park. As water levels drop in the fall, it is easier to spot animals living in water like gators and
manatees. Fall is also a good season for bird-watching, as various migratory species spend winter in the park or
pass through on their way to the tropics.
Congaree National Park (South Carolina)
Congaree was established in 2003 to protect that largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the
American Southeast. Autumn’s gentle weather makes it easier to walk along the park’s path and look for migratory
birds’ or fall colors. It is a national park that never charges an entrance fee.
Natchez Trace Parkway (Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee)
The Natchez Trace flaunts more than 10,000 years of American history and some of the prettiest scenery in the
entire South. Fall is romantic, the parkway’s campgrounds and picnic areas flanked by fallen leaves, and migratory
birds making their way south along the Mississippi Flyway. The fall season also brings special events along the
parkway like the Natchez Balloon Festival (October 18—19) and Dancing With The King (October 18—20) in
Tupelo, Mississippi.
Captiol Reef National Park (Utah)
There’s a special reason to visit in the fall-harvest season in the orchards of historic Fruita. For a small fee,
visitors can self-pick peaches, pears, and apples with tools provided by the Park Service. Afterward, they can enjoy
the fruits of their labor at the picnic area and campground in the park.
