A Practical Guide to Acadia
Acadia National Park lies along the rocky coast of Maine. Established in 1916, it became Acadia National
Park in 1929 and is now one of the most visited parks in the eastern United States, welcoming over two million
visitors yearly.
What Makes Acadia Special
The park combines beautiful mountain views with ocean scenery and forested valleys. The island consists
mainly of pink hard rock formed 400 million years ago. Glaciers carved through the rock over millions of years,
creating valleys and hills. When the last glacier melted 14,000 years ago, it formed lake-filled valleys between the
peaks.
Things to Do
Visitors can drive the Park Loop Road to see the rough coastline and stop at scenic spots like Sand Beach and
Thunder Hole. Hiking enthusiasts can climb Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunrise. The park offers over 120
miles of walking paths for all skill levels. Families can enjoy easy coastal walks or bike along 45 miles of well-
maintained carriage roads.

Seasons and Activities

snowshoeing.
