Being a Beloved Icon
"I am like a shooting star, leaving light to the world," Zhang Haidi once wrote.
At the age of 5, Zhang found she had a spinal tumor(脊髓血管瘤). Three big
operations to remove the tumor left her paralyzed( 瘫痪)from the chest
down.However with a strong will, Zhang has extended the meaning of her life in
many possible ways, and achieved much more than one might think is possible.
Zhang is a successful writer and translator, former rural doctor and now a
promoter for the rights of people with disabilities(残疾).Many of her achievements
have come about through self-education.
Not being able to go to school, Zhang taught herself to read and write.
At 15, Zhang moved to a small village with her parents in 1970. There was no
hospital and the villagers had to walk more than 10 km to see a doctor. She decided to
make a change. She read medical books and practiced acupuncture ( 针 灸 ) on
herself.Soon she acquired enough medical knowledge to help villagers with basic
treatments.During her years there, she treated more than 10,000 people for free,
reported Guangming Daily.
Zhang also taught herself several foreign languages, including English, Japanese,
German and Esperanto(世界语).To learn a new English word, she had to repeat it as
many as 200 times. To expand her vocabulary, she wrote words on desks, mirrors and
even lamps so she could recite( 背 诵 ) them anytime anywhere. She later translated
several works of Western literature into Chinese. She also wrote a dual-language(双语
的)book called Beautiful English (《美丽的英语》)to tell about her experience
learning English.
She has encouraged so many young people and was awarded the title of
"Excellent Member of the Communist Youth League of China" in 1983. In 2018 she
was elected president of the China Disabled Persons' Federation. She has been using
her position and influence to call for more rights for people with disabilities. Before
and during the Beijing 2022Paralympics, Zhang worked as executive president(执行
主 席 )of the organizing committee to promote a barrier-free( 无 障
碍 ) environment.For example, tactile ( 触 觉 的 ) systems for the blind,lowered
service counters for wheel chair users and greater access to buildings. "These
practices can set a good example for China in the future," Zhang said.
Through her life, Zhang has carried out her words - trying to shine like a
shooting star.

Touch down to Earth
China welcomed three heroic astronauts home on April 16.The re-entry
module(返回舱)carrying Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu touched down
safely at the designated( 指定的)Dongfeng Landing Site in Inner Mongolia
autonomous region. This ended the Shenzhou XIII astronauts' six-month space
mission.
This return marks a major breakthrough for China's efforts in space. Let's look
at some of the technical details of the mission.
Speed record
The mission set a new speed record. The Shenzhou XII return capsule revolved
around the Earth 11 times over 24 hours, before returning on Sept 17, 2021. This time
Shenzhou XIII shortened the time to about 9hours, orbiting the Earth five times.
The Shenzhou XIII mission was simplified to only five orbits and was designed
to return more efficiently,according to the Chinese Academy of Space Technology
(CAST).
This approach required more precise control of the spacecraft and more accurate
orbital calculations. This meant that when the spacecraft separated, it could quickly
target the landing area, calculate the return path, and adjust its altitude, Wang Ya'nan,
editor-in-chief of Beijing-based Aerospace Knowledge magazine,told the Global
Times.
"Having the ability to adopt such a fast return method indicates that China's
return technology for manned(载人 的)missions is very mature and reliable,”Wang
added.
Temperature control
Another challenge for astronauts returning to Earth is traveling through the
atmosphere. After the reentry capsule enters the atmosphere, there is fierce friction(摩
擦) with the air. The surface temperature of the capsule can reach thousands of
degrees.
To solve this problem, the researchers designed a heat-resistant coating on the
surface of the Shenzhou XIII return capsule. They also laid a layer of ablative
material(烧蚀材料)that sublimated(升华)and fell off when the temperature reached
a certain level, taking a lot of heat with it, according to People's Daily Online.
Landing
The reentry capsule landed upright( 直 立 的 ) in the designated area. Such a
landing position is rare in China's space flight history. So far, only Shenzhou VI and
Shenzhou XIII have achieved an upright landing.To achieve this, astronauts must
operate and let go of parachute( 降落伞)with precise timing.A small mistake may
