In most situations, the responses of bystanders ( 旁观者) like negative body language,
uninvited comments or pieces of advice to a child’s angry behavior can add to the stress of the
situation. But sometimes bystanders’ understanding, and sometimes their words or actions can
make a positive difference. One mom experienced this firsthand.
This mom was obviously pregnant and traveling alone with her young son at a Los Angeles
airport. Then things took a turn for the worse.
The boy, about 18 months old, according to Beth, a Facebook user, was running all over the
place, kicking, screaming, and lying on the floor, unwilling to get aboard the plane. His mom did
her best to calm him down, but Beth said, “She couldn’t pick him up because he was so upset. He
kept running away from her, then lying down on the ground, kicking and screaming again.”
Finally, the mom was at her wit’s end. She sat down on the floor next to her son, buried her face
in her hands, and began to cry.
Then the most amazing thing happened.
A group of six or seven women, Beth included, circled around the mother-son pair and did
something to help. Beth sang him “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider.” Another offered an orange. Another
gave him a toy she had on hand. Another helped get his cup out of Mom’s bag. Yet another
tended to Mom by offering her a water bottle. With the help of these women, the kid and his
mother calmed down and were able to board the plane.
And then life moved on. All of the strangers went their separate ways without speaking of
what had happened. But Beth said it was something she’d never forget. “We were strangers,
gathering to solve something,” she wrote. “It occurred to me that a circle of passers-by, with a
mission, can save the world.”

There is more that comes with older age than greying hair and wrinkled skin. When humans
reach their later years, they prefer long-term friends and their social circle is reduced.
Now, for what seems to be the first time, scientists have seen the same behaviour in another
species. Twenty years of observations of chimpanzees (黑猩猩) show that older males choose to
hang out with their long-term friends at the cost of other relationships.
The researchers studied 78, 000 hours of observations made between 1996 and 2016 that
followed the social activities of 21 male chimpanzees between the ages of 15 and 58 years old.
They divided the chimps’ relationships depending on the amount of time they spent with others.
They then rated the various relationships as mutual ( 相 互 的 ) friendships, where both chimps
seemed to enjoy the relationship; one-sided friendships, where one chimp was more willing to be
friends than the other; and non-friendships, where neither chimp showed interest in the other.
When the scientists looked at the types of friendships, they found that the older chimps had
more mutual friendships and fewer one-sided friendships than younger chimps. Another feature
seen in older humans was also found in the chimps. As the males got older, they started fewer
fights and tended to threaten others less often.
The observations have left the researchers puzzled. According to a theory in psychology,
older humans prefer more positive relationships because they realize time is running out. But
many animal experts argue that chimpanzees don’t have the human sense of death, suggesting
something else is driving the behaviour.
Robin Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Oxford, said that
in humans, the decrease in social circles is due to reduced desire to get out and meet people
combined with less opportunity. In chimpanzees, as older males compete less for females, they
may focus on close and beneficial relationships with trusted partners, she said.
