Robert Qian, a Chinese Canadian, came to visit his ancestors’ (祖先) hometown many years ago. He found that in
China, his family was like tall tree with long roots.
Robert took the trip as part of the programme In Search of Roots. The programme started in 1980, and brought
thousands of students to China to look for their families’ roots. The young people were usually between 16 and 25
years old. Most, like Robert, could hardly speak any Chinese and never came to China before.
During the two-week trip, the students studied Chinese culture and visited interesting places. They were most
excited when they came into their ancestors’ villages. They felt that they were part watched the village people
doing their daily activities.
Cathy Qin, a young American student, had this to say, “Many thanks for In Search of Roots. I begin to understand
my Chinese roots and who I am. It was a great trip.”
For these young people living in foreign countries, the programme helps them to learn more about themselves. “I
really enjoyed the trip,” said Robert. “And I want to find out more about my roots during my time here.”
