阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳答案.
Benjamin Franklin said that, “If you want something done, ask a busy person.” That’s how
Manny Abreu practices.
Throughout his four years at Kellenberg Memorial High School in the US, Abreu made
community service an important part of his life.
“I don’t know where he finds the time to do everything,” said Erin Ronan, Abreu’s math
teacher. “He’s truly a class act (出色的人).”
As an honors student, Abreu, 18, took part in different voluntary activities after school,
during weekends and summer holidays. These included helping staff at the public library, doing
landscape work at Kellenberg and serving customers at a local restaurant.
But faced with a limited number of hours in a day, Abreu left his library job last summer to
start working as an emergency medical technician a role that fits his passion for making a
difference in other people’s lives.
“My appreciation ( ) for service has guided me into giving back,” said Abreu, who is
setting his sights on becoming a doctor. “It’s such a rewarding feeling to help someone.”
During his years at high school, Abreu devoted between 40 and 50 hours of his time each
year to volunteer work – more than double the school’s annual (年的) requirement of 20 hours.
For all his hard work, Abreu was welcomed into a leadership club that organizes fellow students’
volunteer activities.
St Martin de Porres Marianist School (Kellenberg’s sister school) also benefited from Abreu’s
devotion. Through his school’s Smart Club program, he voluntarily provided homework help and
played games with the junior high school students.
Abreu thanked his parents for inspiring him to do the right thing, saying they are “the most
selfless people I know”. He remembered when he was about 6 years old, and his mother invited a
disadvantaged neighborhood boy to have dinner.
Upon observing ( 观 察 ) the boy’s happiness, Abreu came away with a sense of how he
wanted to live his own life – “I won’t focus on my own desires (). I’ll help as many people as
I can,” he said.

American and British English are similar in many ways. For example, the majority of the
spellings and grammar rules are largely the same. However, beyond simple spellings like colour
(UK) and color (US), the two languages truly diverge (有区别) through speech.
Take the accents () of Chris Evans, the star of Captain America, and Rowan Atkinson,
who played Mr Bean, as an example of how far the two languages differ in modern times. But
have you ever wondered how this change came about?
For that, we have to look at the origins of both dialects. According to the BBC, British
English dates back to 449 AD, when the Saxons and the Angles tribes (部落) from modern-day
Germany and Denmark invaded (入侵) Britain, replacing the ancient Celtic language.
As Celtic gradually faded, an early form of British English emerged with influences from
French and Latin. It later became standard throughout the UK following the first complete Modern
English translation of the Bible ( 《圣经》) in 1535 and the emergence of playwrights like
William Shakespeare. This went on to form British English as we know today and was heavily
influenced by the accent spoken in London.
Across the Atlantic
However, across the Atlantic Ocean, Indo-European languages spoken by migrants ( ),
regional dialects of British colonists () and Native American words all formed the
basis of US English. New words also arose from the need to explain unfamiliar landscapes,
animals and living conditions, but they soon turned into a revolutionary ( ) tool during
the independence movement.
In 1789, lexicographer (词典编纂者) Noah Webster wrote, “As an independent nation, our
honor requires us to have a system of our own, in language as well as government.”
Post-revolution US English kept changing based on neighboring cultures. This can still be
seen through state names such as Delaware and Illinois, which were named after Native American
tribes, and Colorado and Nevada, which were influenced by Spanish colonizers in the 1800s.
These days, Britons and Americans still argue over terminology ( ) and spellings. But
their differences form a key part of each nation’s historical culture. Indeed, it shows the truth
behind the phrase, “Britain and America, two nations divided by a common language.”
4. Why are Chris Evans and Rowan Atkinson mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show the two languages have the same grammar rules.
B. To tell readers how to tell the two languages apart.
C. To explain why American and British English differ.
D. To give readers an example how the languages differ.
