Most human beings are kind, good-natured beings who will help out someone in need if they
are able to, especially if that someone is a little kid. Travis Saltier is one of those human beings.
The 18-year-old didn’t think twice about helping a little boy who walked up to the counter at
Freddy's Frozen Custard where he'd been working for a year. The little boy named Johnny Smith
had just finished eating with his mother when he walked up to the counter where Travis was
working as the cashier ( .He ordered an ice cream. " Once I told him his total, he was
counting his change and all of his money, and then he handed everything to me. But he didn't have
enough money to pay for it. He was maybe $2 short,” Travis said.
But Travis wasn't about to let this boy walk out of the restaurant without his ice cream. So, he
pulled out his creditswiped (it and told the boy that it was on him. “He had a big smile and
the widest eyes when he ran back to his mom and told her what happened ’ Travis said.
About 30 minutes later, the little boy walked up to Travis and handed him a note before
walking out of the restaurant with his mom. It says,“Thank you for being so nice and paying for
my ice cream. We need more people like you. The note also had a $100 bill folded in it.

other goodies.

Have you ever made a mistake while trying to print from a computer? That paper probably
went right into the recycling bin. From there it is taken to a waste-handling plant to be
eventually broken and remade. But what if you could simply erase (擦掉)your mistake and reuse
that paper? It may become available, thanks to a new technology.
It’s a new type of rewritable paper that can be used more than 100 times. Words and pictures
remain visible (on it for at least half a year. This is nearly the first rewritable paper.
But the marks on those earlier versions tended to fade away in less than three months.
Lu zhuo Chen led the group that made the new rewritable paper. His team was inspired by
pens that contain erasable ink. That ink disappears when heated. To make its new rewritable paper.
Chen's group switched the ink from the pen to the paper. They covered one side of regular paper
with the ink used in those erasable pens. Using a heated pen or printer, they can now write or print
on this paper. That warmth makes the ink disappear.
This is the opposite of how writing usually works, where ink is applied to paper. With the
new system, the spots where you write become white instead of colored because that heat makes
the ink covering the white paper disappear.
Qiang Zhao has a creative mind behind another type of rewritable paper. He thinks Chen's
paper is simple and doesn’t cost much to make, so it should be easy and fairly inexpensive to
produce. However, the paper will need a lot of ink. In large doses (剂量),chemicals in the ink
can be bad for the environment and people's health. Zhao would like scientists to develop a safer
ink. Still, he thinks this paper will have wide applications.
28. Why does the author raise the questions in the first paragraph?
A.To prove the necessity of recycling paper.
B.To introduce the importance of rewritable paper.
C.To draw readers attention to the new technology.
D.To show the development of paper-making technology.
29. What's the advantage of the new rewritable paper over earlier versions?
A. It can be reused for a lot more times.
B.The costs of producing it are much lower.
C.It can be produced in a much easier way.
D.The contents on it can be more long-lasting.
30. Which of the following reflects Qiang Zhao's opinion on Chen's paper?
A.It still needs improving. B. It's somewhat impractical.
C. It does no harm to its users. D. It's worth promoting right away.
31. What can we know about Luzhuo Chen’s new paper from the text?
A.It shows colored words or pictures.
B.It doesn’t require ink to write on it.
C.It will replace ordinary writing paper soon.
D.It has no requirement on the writing tool.

Special permeable (可 渗透 的 ) concrete pavement can help lessen the “urban heat island
effect"which causes cities to burn in summer, according to a team of engineers.
Impermeable pavement made of concrete or asphalt (covers more than 30 percent of
most urban areas and can be over 140 degrees Fahrenheit in the summertime. In cities with 1
million or more people, average air temperatures can be 1.8 to 5. 4 degrees Fahrenheit higher than
those in less crowded areas. The difference can be up to 22 degrees at night. The heat can increase
the demand for energy in the summertime.
“The engineering team at Rutgers University developed designs for permeable concrete that
is highly effective in handling heat. Permeable pavement contains large connected pores (气孔 ) ?
allowing water to flow through and reducing pavement temperature. Water in pores will also
evaporate ( 蒸 发 ) reducing pavement surface temperature. Moreover, permeable concrete
pavement does a better job reflecting heat than asphalt pavement.
The study found that permeable concrete pavement gives off slightly more heat on sunny
days compared with conventional concrete pavement, but 25 to 30 percent less heat on days after
rainfall. The engineers improved the design of permeable concrete with high thermal
conductivity----meaning it can conduct heat more quickly to the ground further reducing heat
output by 2. 5 percent to 5. 2 percent. Therefore , permeable concrete pavement can be used in
cities to mitigate the urban heat island effect, while benefiting storm water management and
improving water quality.
Previously, permeable pavement was used to lower, storm water runoff and flooding risk in
urban areas. Today, permeable concrete is mainly used in lightly trafficked areas, such as
sidewalks, parking lots and rest areas. The Rutgers- led team is studying how to make permeable
concrete stronger and more durable ( 耐用的). We can make use of it while building urban
streets.
32. The underlined word "mitigate" in paragraph 4 can be best replaced by “______”
A. avoid B. remove C. have D. reduce
33. Why isn't permeable concrete used in urban streets?
A. Because it is quite costly to make it. B. Because it isn't environment-friendly.
C. Because it lacks strength and durability. D. Because it takes time to mass-produce it.
34. What can be learnt from the text?
A.Permeable concrete is less likely to conduct heat.
B.The population of an area affects its air temperature.
C.Impermeable concrete has an advantage of handling heat.
D.Permeable concrete pavement does not reflect but absorb heat.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A.How Roads Can Help to Cool Burning Cities
B.How Roads Can Be More Environment-friendly
C.Good News: City Heat Will Soon Become History
D.Dilemma of City Lifethe Urban Heat Island Effect
