I've been a volunteer in the Macmillan@ Glasgow Libraries programme for just over a year. I
got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work. I thought
being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Volunteer might be a good way to do that by
using some of the skills I learned at work.
At one time, I felt I made a real difference when a lady came in to use the service. She was very
upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind.
We, together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions( ) she felt.
We knew we could arrange something, so we discussed with her what could be done for her family.
She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to
get the ball rolling during her visit.
The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is nonclinical and
therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor's surgery. The team in the library are not
medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often.
It's great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a
resolution() for people who come in. It's good to have the team at the other end of the phone
whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer.
4What can we infer about the author?
AHe is a retired doctor. BHe is volunteering in a hospital.
CHe is a counselor in cancer. DHe has fought against cancer before.
5Why did the lady feel upset?
ABecause she was affected by cancer.
BBecause her husband suffered from cancer.
CBecause she didn't know how to treat cancer.
DBecause she had a poor relation with her husband.
6What do we know about the volunteers?
AThey do well in teamwork. BThey receive medical training.
CThey all used to be helped. DThey often meet unusual things.
7Why does the author write this text?
ATo call on readers to do voluntary work.
BTo show us how to help those in trouble.
CTo share his experiences as a volunteer.
DTo teach us how to take care of cancer patients.

Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, it also increases pollution and
wastes energy and water. Only 23% of all plastic in America ends up in a recycling bin, meaning
over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has
invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.
It is a convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either peel
off the membrane() or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your
mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. One problem the scientists have run
into is how to ship lots of Ooho bubbles without arriving with a very wet truck. However, they have
attempted to package units of individual bubbles together inside a larger and thicker membrane. It is
targeting large outdoor events such as marathons, music festivals, and sporting events, where tons of
plastic bottles are used, and frequently left behind as litter. And too much plastic is sure to do harm to
the environment, which could account for their purpose of such a new invention.
The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials needed to
produce Ooho; they have recently applied for a patent for their new advancement. The price for an
individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not been set yet, but they cost about two cents to create a
unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. It has appeared at events in London, San Francisco,
Boston, at conferences, festivals, and so on.
Ooho is catching many people's attention and has raised over $1 million and gained 1,000 investors
in only three days. It is mostly being sold at events at the moment to keep the consumer's interest
when the production machine is running. It is quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out this year for
these bottles of the future.
8How is most plastic dealt with in America?
AIt's sold. BIt's recycled.
CIt's buried. DIt's wasted.
9Why did the team invent Ooho?
ATo make a profit for a company.
BTo protect the environment.
CTo make people eat as they drink.
DTo reduce the cost of the plastic bottle.
10What can we infer about Ooho from the text?
AIt is easy and safe to ship it in large amounts.
BIt has become popular since it began to be sold.
CIt might be sold at a lower price than plastic bottles.
DIt cost the team a lot of money to develop the technology.
11What does the author really want to say in the last paragraph?
AOoho is to be a success in the future.
BOoho is being supported by smart people.
COoho is taking the place of plastic bottles now.
DOoho is being produced to attract more investors.

If you're anything like most working Americans, you probably make a beeline for the coffee
machine as soon as you wake up in the morning. In fact, over 85 percent of Americans consume
caffeine(咖啡因) regularlyand coffee is the preferred medium. As for the perfect time for your
Joe? There's a “sweet spot” that could maximize your caffeine kick, and surprisingly enough, it's not
the first thing in the morning.
Although having your coffee right away may cause you to think quickly in the morning, that
feeling quickly crashes just a few hours later. “Definitely limit coffee when you first wake up”
Laura Cipullo, registered dietitian and author of Women's Health Body Clock Diet, told CNBC.
To get the most benefit, experts recommend drinking your coffee in the midmorning or early
afternoon, instead. Getting caffeine about three to four hours after you get out of bed will do the
trick, too. Why? At those times in the day, your body is low on cortisol(皮质)the stress hormone
that makes you think quicklyand desperately needs a good pickmeup.
Of course, if you can't function without your morning coffee, then by all means, continue
drinking! Not everyone agrees with the midmorning theory, anyway. Registered dietitiannutritionist
Melanie Dellinges believes when you consume caffeine is not in the least important; it's how much
caffeine you consume that matters the most. She recommends limiting your intake to two to four
cups a day.
